and Yr27, <strong>the</strong> seedl<strong>in</strong>g data may not be correct, as <strong>in</strong> field trials cv. Kauz had<br />

shown a high level <strong>of</strong> resistance. Kauz also carries Yr9 and Yr27 <strong>in</strong><br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ation. Multiplication <strong>of</strong> a breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e derived from a cross <strong>of</strong> Kauz<br />

and Opata 85, and hence carry<strong>in</strong>g Yr27, was suspended <strong>in</strong> 2002 due to its<br />

susceptibility, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that virulence for Yr27 should be present <strong>in</strong> Iran but<br />

not <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with Yr9. Kauz has rema<strong>in</strong>ed resistant <strong>in</strong> West and Central<br />

Asia; however, dur<strong>in</strong>g 2003 we observed stripe rust on a Kauz plot <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

International Disease Trap Nursery planted <strong>in</strong> Kyrgyzstan, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong><br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> Yr9 and Yr27 is not effective <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. A different selection <strong>of</strong><br />

Attila that does not carry Yr9 has shown moderate susceptibility <strong>in</strong> Tajikistan,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g virulence for Yr27. Comb<strong>in</strong>ed virulences for <strong>the</strong> Yr9 and Yr27 genes<br />

have been present <strong>in</strong> Mexico s<strong>in</strong>ce 1996, and also occur <strong>in</strong> Ecuador.<br />

Incorporation <strong>of</strong> durable resistance to stripe and leaf rusts<br />

<strong>in</strong> PBW 343 and Inqilab 92<br />

Durable resistance to stripe rust and leaf rust are based on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>of</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>or, slow-rust<strong>in</strong>g resistance genes that have small to <strong>in</strong>termediate, but<br />

additive, effects. If we look at <strong>the</strong> disease progressions for susceptible and<br />

slow-rust<strong>in</strong>g cultivars (Figure 1), we f<strong>in</strong>d that as more m<strong>in</strong>or genes are<br />

accumulated <strong>in</strong> a l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> rust becomes slower. Accumulat<strong>in</strong>g 4 to 5<br />

such m<strong>in</strong>or genes leads to near-immunity <strong>in</strong> most environments (S<strong>in</strong>gh,<br />

Huerta-Esp<strong>in</strong>o and Rajaram, 2000). Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> observation that two megacultivars—PBW<br />

343 and Inqilab 91—are moderately susceptible <strong>in</strong> Mexico, <strong>in</strong><br />

1999 we <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g durable resistance genes <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

important cultivars us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle-backcross selected-bulk breed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

approach described below.<br />
