Courses<br />

PROC 5005. PHYTOPATHOGENIC FUNGI.<br />

Three credit hours. Two hours of lecture and one<br />

three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite:<br />

PROC 4006 or authorization of the Department<br />

Director.<br />

Examination of the most interesting groups of fungi<br />

from the phytopathogenic point of view: their<br />

taxonomy, nomenclature, morphology, genetics,<br />

host-parasite relationship, physiology, and ecology.<br />

Distinctive characteristic of specific pathogens.<br />

Field trips for collection and observation are<br />

required.<br />

PROC 5006. INSECTS OF TROPICAL CROPS.<br />

Three credit hours. Two hours of lecture and one<br />

three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite:<br />

PROC 4008 or CFIT 4008 or authorization of the<br />

Director of the Department.<br />

Major insects affecting tropical crops; their biology<br />

and taxonomy; identification of damages in the<br />

field as well as in the laboratory; appropriate<br />

measures of control.<br />

DEPARTMENT OF<br />

HORTICULTURE<br />

The Department of Horticulture offers a program<br />

of instruction leading to a degree in Agriculture<br />

with specialization in Horticulture. The<br />

Department of Horticulture is the academic and<br />

administrative unit of the College of Agricultural<br />

Sciences dealing with teaching and research<br />

related to coffee, starchy food crops, tropical<br />

fruits, vegetables, ornamentals and food science.<br />

Teaching includes courses in plant propagation,<br />

production, management, physiology, marketing<br />

and food technology of various horticultural<br />

commodities.<br />

Horticultural products have a very high<br />

economic potential for Puerto Rico and<br />

neighboring countries. Production of<br />

horticultural crops as well as processing has<br />

significantly increased in the past years. The<br />

potential for horticultural activities is shown by<br />

the fact that Puerto Rico is importing a high<br />

percentage of horticultural products which could<br />

be produced on the island. The Department also<br />

offers a study program leading to the degree of<br />

Master of Science in Horticulture.<br />
