COURSES OF INSTRUCTION<br />
<strong>Undergraduate</strong> Courses<br />
INGL 0066. PRE-BASIC ENGLISH. Remedial<br />
course without credit. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week.<br />
Intensive training in basic language for students<br />
requiring remedial work in English.<br />
INGL 3101-3102. BASIC COURSE IN<br />
ENGLISH. Three credit hours per semester. Three<br />
hours of lecture per week, supplemented by work in<br />
the language laboratory, each semester.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement by examination or INGL<br />
0066.<br />
This course is designed to meet the student's<br />
immediate needs, and to give him or her a<br />
command of the fundamental structure of the<br />
English language. The oral approach is used.<br />
Skills in reading and writing are developed.<br />
Students will be grouped according to their ability<br />
to use the language, and arrangements will be made<br />
to give additional help to those students who show<br />
poor preparation in English.<br />
INGL 3103. INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH I.<br />
Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week. Prerequisite: Placement by examination.<br />
Analysis of selected readings, such as essays,<br />
fiction, poetry or drama, and practice in writing<br />
compositions with attention given as needed to<br />
grammar and idiomatic expressions.<br />
INGL 3104. INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH II.<br />
Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week. Prerequisite: INGL 3103.<br />
Analysis of selected readings, such as essays,<br />
fiction, poetry or drama, and practice in writing<br />
compositions with attention given as needed to<br />
grammar and idiomatic expression.<br />
INGL 3191. CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH.<br />
Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week. Prerequisite: INGL 3202.<br />
Development of naturalness, correctness and clarity<br />
in conversational English; analysis and correction<br />
of individual faults in speech delivery; application<br />
of phonetics to problems of pronunciation and<br />
articulation in North American English.<br />
INGL 3201-3202. ENGLISH COMPOSITION<br />
AND READING. Three credit hours per semester.<br />
Three hours of lecture per week each semester.<br />
Prerequisite: INGL 3102 or placement by<br />
examination.<br />
Practice in writing compositions and making oral<br />
reports upon selected readings, including essays,<br />
short stories, poems, dramas and novels. Attention<br />
will be given as needed to grammar and idiomatic<br />
expressions. This course or its equivalent is a<br />
requisite for graduation.<br />
INGL 3211. ADVANCED ENGLISH I. Three<br />
credit hours. Three hours of lecture per week.<br />
Prerequisite: placement by College Board<br />
Achievement Exam.<br />
Development of reading, discussion, and writing<br />
skills through the experience, interpretation, and<br />
evaluation of short story, modern drama, poetry,<br />
and the essay. Introduction to library skills related<br />
to literary study.<br />
INGL 3212. ADVANCED ENGLISH II. Three<br />
credit hours. Three hours of lecture per week.<br />
Prerequisite: INGL 3211 or INGL 3011.<br />
Development of reading, discussion, and writing<br />
skills through the experience, interpretation, and<br />
evaluation of the novel, Shakespearean drama, and<br />
the complex texture of poetry. A research paper<br />
related to literary study will be required.<br />
INGL 3225. INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS.<br />
Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week. Prerequisite: INGL 3202 or INGL 3104 or<br />
INGL 3212.<br />
An introductory survey of linguistics with special<br />
attention to the English language, emphasizing<br />
phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics,<br />
historical change, and social and regional<br />
variations.<br />
