credit hours. Two three-hour workshops periods<br />
per week. Prerequisites: ARTE 3121 or ARTE<br />

Advanced techniques and methods in painting with<br />
emphasis on the development of individual<br />
expression.<br />
ARTE 4995. SPECIAL TOPICS. One to three<br />
credit hours. One to three hours of seminar per<br />
week. Zero to six hours of workshop per week.<br />
Prerequisite: Authorization of the Director of the<br />
Department.<br />
Special seminars on a chosen theme in the fine arts,<br />
or in the history and theory of art.<br />

A study of the sounds, intonation and rhythm of the<br />
French language, with intensive laboratory practice.<br />
FRAN 3135. SUMMER STUDY PROGRAM IN<br />
PARIS. Three credit hours. Forty hours of lecture<br />
and ten hours of practice.<br />
A 50-hour program of summer study at the<br />
University of Paris (Sorbonne). Intensive study of<br />
French language and culture.<br />
FRAN 3141-3142. FRENCH I-II. Three credit<br />
hours per semester. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week each semester.<br />
Thorough training in the fundamentals of French<br />
grammar and phonetics; exercises in composition.<br />
The direct method is used as much as possible.<br />
FRAN 3143-3144. FRENCH III-IV. Three credit<br />
hours per semester. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week each semester. Prerequisite: FRAN 3142.<br />
Review of French grammar; study of French idioms<br />
and word groups; composition; intensive and<br />

Basic French vocabulary and style used in business<br />

Intensive oral practice in the French language. The<br />
emphasis will be on contemporary colloquial<br />

An advanced study of French grammar by means of<br />
translations from Spanish to French.<br />
FRAN 4008. ADVANCED COMPOSITION.<br />
Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />

Intensive study of the techniques of composition,<br />
with emphasis on style and editing.<br />
FRAN 4036. BUSINESS FRENCH II. Three<br />

Advanced French vocabulary and style used in<br />
business and commerce. Emphasis on written and<br />
oral reports. Offered in French.<br />

A course in advanced French conversation, with<br />
emphasis on idiomatic expressions and common<br />
phrases, and applied grammar. Translations from<br />
