INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING<br />
The Industrial Engineering Department offers a<br />
program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree<br />
in Industrial Engineering. It is a five-year<br />
program which prepares professionals for the<br />
practice of Industrial Engineering in Puerto Rico<br />
and elsewhere.<br />
Graduates from the Industrial Engineering<br />
program are instrumental in planning, designing,<br />
implementing and evaluating products, services,<br />
and systems which integrate people, materials,<br />
equipment, and information for the progress and<br />
improvement of the quality of life of humankind.<br />
They insure that these products, services, or<br />
systems can be provided economically with the<br />
required level of quality necessary for satisfying<br />
society’s needs. The Industrial Engineer draws<br />
upon knowledge and skills mostly from the areas<br />
of mathematics and the physical, social,<br />
physiological and computer sciences, together<br />
with principles and methods of engineering<br />
analysis and design.<br />
The mission of the Industrial Engineering<br />
Department is to serve society through the<br />
formation of excellent professional engineers by<br />
performing research, and by providing service in<br />
Industrial Engineering and related fields, through<br />
innovative and creative processes with a highly<br />
motivated workforce within a favorable work<br />
environment.<br />
Its vision is to be the best alternative for the<br />
Hispanic bilingual community in: forming<br />
professionals of excellence in Industrial<br />
Engineering and related areas through an<br />
innovative educational curricula and real life<br />
learning experiences; providing leading outreach<br />
and technology transfer activities taking<br />
advantage of the unique industrial concentration<br />
existing in Puerto Rico; and, performing research<br />
in line with the operational excellence and<br />
innovation needs of its industrial, government,<br />
and service partners.<br />

statistical quality control and<br />
improvement systems, design of<br />
automated computer-based control<br />
systems for manufacturing and service<br />
systems, and economic evaluation of<br />
engineering solutions.<br />
2. Our graduates will exhibit rich<br />
industrial experience through projects,<br />
internships, cooperative education and<br />
other interactions with professional and<br />
industrial organizations.<br />
3. Our graduates will have ethical, social,<br />
and environmental sensibilities, and will<br />
be able to communicate effectively in a<br />
bilingual setting and become industry<br />
leaders.<br />
4. Our graduates will have the ability to<br />
work in multi-disciplinary teams.<br />
5. Our graduates will have an<br />
understanding of the need to continue to<br />
develop entrepreneurial skills.<br />
Graduates from the Industrial Engineering<br />
program are prepared to work in manufacturing,<br />
service and governmental organizations.<br />
Employers of some of our industrial engineering<br />
graduates include:<br />
• Manufacturing industries such as<br />
pharmaceuticals, textiles, food<br />
processing, electronics, clothing and<br />
shoes, health and hospital related<br />
products.<br />
• Services industries such as: banks,<br />
hospitals, supermarket chains, furniture<br />
chains, communications, managerial<br />
consultants, system developers, public<br />
utilities, and cooperatives.<br />
• Government agencies.<br />
This program is fully accredited by ABET, the<br />
Accreditation Board for Engineering and<br />
Technology.<br />
The educational objectives of the Industrial<br />
Engineering undergraduate program are the<br />
following:<br />
