Library System<br />

LIBRARY SYSTEM<br />

The Mayagüez Campus General Library consists<br />

of a main library, a special departmental<br />

collection and an Educational Technology Unit.<br />

The main library has an area of approximately<br />

124,335 square feet. It has a seating capacity of<br />

1,278, 18 study rooms for graduate students and<br />

faculty, 10 study rooms for group discussions<br />

and 2 library instruction classrooms.<br />

<strong>UPRM</strong> library serves the local campus<br />

community as well as residents of Mayagüez and<br />

nearby towns. It fully supports <strong>UPRM</strong><br />

educational and research mission and objectives<br />

by providing the necessary library and<br />

information resources, facilities and services. In<br />

order to fulfill its purpose, the library is divided<br />

into three major areas: Technical Services,<br />

Public Services and Educational Technology.<br />

Public Services provides reference and research<br />

resources which include the following<br />

collections and data centers:<br />

• Circulation/ Reserve<br />

• Collection for the Visually Impaired<br />

• Interlibrary Loans<br />

• Marine Sciences Collection<br />

• Music and Oral History Collection<br />

• Patent and Trademark Depository<br />

Library (PTDL)<br />

• Puerto Rico Census Data Center<br />

• Puerto Rican Collection - Manuel María<br />

Sama y Auger<br />

• Reference/Documents<br />

• Serials and Electronic Resources<br />

The Educational Technology Unit consists of<br />

an Audiovisual Services Department and the<br />

Closed Circuit Television Department. The<br />

unit’s mission is to support the academic<br />

programs of the institution through multimedia<br />

technology applications.<br />

The Audiovisual Services Department includes<br />

the following units: graphic arts, audio studio, an<br />

audiovisual equipment lending repair shop, and a<br />

film library. It is located on the second floor of<br />

the Sanchez Hidalgo Building.<br />

Closed Circuit Television Department<br />

(CCTV), located in the Nursing Building,<br />

produces instructional and cultural TV programs<br />

and videotape recording services. It provides ondemand<br />

multi-channel broadcasting,<br />

teleconferencing, satellite downlinks, television<br />

studio and a video library.<br />

Technical Services acquires and prepares<br />

library materials including selecting, ordering,<br />

invoicing, bookkeeping, labeling, cataloging, and<br />

classifying. Technical Services is responsible for<br />

library automation, staff training, in-house<br />

binding, preservation of materials, and the gift<br />

and exchange program.<br />

<strong>UPRM</strong> library holdings include: 220,315<br />

volumes; 5,424 journals; 258,243 microfiches;<br />

12,719 micro cards; 19,232 microfilms; 584,206<br />

government documents; 714 films; 8,214 maps;<br />

8,460 sound recordings; 605 musical scores; 916<br />

sound magnetic tapes; 24,632 slides; 4,177<br />

videocassettes; 687 filmstrips; 4,767 CD/DVD;<br />

104 computer programs; 2,434 theses; 6 million<br />

United States patents, and 2.5 million United<br />

States-issued trademarks.<br />

The library is a selective depository for<br />

publications of the U.S. Government, the Inter-<br />

American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation<br />

(IICA) in San José, Costa Rica, and the Service<br />

Center for Aging Information (SCAN). It is one<br />

of the coordinating agencies of the Puerto Rico<br />

Census Data Center under the Planning Board of<br />

Puerto Rico. It serves as depository for the<br />

US Bureau of Census publications.<br />

On March 1995, the library became a member of<br />

the Patent and Trademark Depository Library<br />

Program of the U.S. Patent and Trademark<br />

Office. It is one of two libraries outside the<br />

United States, that serves the Caribbean and<br />

Latin America.<br />

Other library services include book loans,<br />

document and journal loans, interlibrary loans,<br />

reference and information services, access to<br />

electronic indexes and abstracts, online catalog,<br />

(http://www.uprm.edu/library), library<br />

orientations and library tours, library research<br />

and instruction courses, document and fax<br />

delivery, photocopying, sale of photocopying<br />

cards, duplication of materials in microforms,<br />

loans of audiovisual equipment, online retrieval<br />

services, selective dissemination of information,<br />

access to Web based and CD-ROM full text<br />

databases, Internet access, and access to remote<br />

government and commercial databases.<br />

Librarians assist students and faculty in their<br />

study and research endeavors.<br />
