DEPARTMENT OF<br />
MATHEMATICS<br />
The Department of Mathematics offers three<br />
programs leading to the Bachelor of Science<br />
degree: Pure Mathematics, Computer Science,<br />
and Mathematics Education. The Bachelor of<br />
Science degree in Mathematics provides a solid<br />
preparation for students, enabling them to follow<br />
careers in industry, in government, in the field of<br />
education or to pursue graduate studies.<br />
Courses in Computer Science are frequently<br />
updated to keep pace with this rapidly changing<br />
field. Statistics is emerging as an important<br />
component of the Department and a growing<br />
number of courses in this field are also available.<br />
The Department of Mathematics also offers two<br />
programs leading to a Master of Science degree.<br />
One program is in Scientific Computing and the<br />
other is in Mathematics which includes<br />
specializations in Pure Mathematics, Applied<br />
Mathematics and Statistics. The Department of<br />
Mathematics participates in an Interdisciplinary<br />
Program leading to a Ph.D. degree in Computing<br />
and Information Sciences and Engineering, with<br />
the Department of Electrical and Computer<br />

Advanced placement tests may be used to obtain<br />
credit for one or more of the following courses:<br />
MATE 3005, MATE 3171, MATE 3172, and<br />
MATE 3031. Refer to the section of this<br />
catalogue where your program is described to<br />
determine which courses are applicable.<br />
The Department of Mathematics requires a<br />
minimum of C in all courses which are part of<br />
the student’s major field of study. Further<br />
explanation of placement criteria and other<br />
important information is provided in the<br />
Academic Regulations section.<br />
Facilities: The Department of Mathematics is<br />
located in the Monzón building. These facilities<br />
include 15 classrooms and 6 student computer<br />
laboratories. The department also has 35 offices<br />
in Monzón. All computer laboratories are<br />
connected to the internet and have access to<br />
Office Suite Programs (Microsoft Office) in<br />
addition to programs like C, C++,Java, Scheme,<br />
Prolog, Matlab, Matemática. The following<br />
