SOCI 4095. PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL WORK.<br />
Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />
week. Prerequisite: CISO 3122.<br />
Presentation of the basic principles of social work<br />
as they are illustrated in case studies of groups and<br />
of the community. The student will become<br />
acquainted with the work of the social service<br />
agencies in Puerto Rico.<br />
SOCI 4101. CRIMINOLOGY. Three credit hours<br />
per semester. Three hours of lecture per week each<br />
semester. Prerequisite: CISO 3122 or SOCI 3262<br />
or PSIC 3002.<br />
Basic terminology; the legal, sociological and<br />
cultural aspects of criminality; factors determining<br />
delinquency; psychological and psychophysical<br />
aspects of crime; classification of crimes, and<br />
penology.<br />
SOCI 4115. CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL<br />
THEORY. Three credit hours. Three hours of<br />
lecture per week. Prerequisite: SOCI 3262.<br />
Consideration of major themes in theory and<br />
methodology of selected areas of specialization<br />
within sociology and related disciplines.<br />
SOCI 4125. STRUCTURE OF SOCIETY IN<br />
PUERTO RICO. Three credit hours. Three hours<br />
of lecture per week. Prerequisite: SOCI 3262 or<br />
PSIC 3002 or CIPO 3011 or ANTR 3015.<br />
A survey of Puerto Rico's institutions. Attention is<br />
given both to the structure of each institution and to<br />
the problems which each of them faces today.<br />
SOCI 4145. SOCIAL PLANNING. Three credit<br />
hours. Three hours of lecture per week.<br />
A comprehensive analysis of the principles of<br />
social planning and the special problems inherent to<br />
planning in a democratic society.<br />
SOCI 4165. SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN THE<br />
CONTEMPORARY WORLD. Three credit hours.<br />
Three hours of lecture per week. Prerequisite:<br />
SOCI 3265.<br />
Discussion and special reports on theoretical and<br />
methodological approaches to human group<br />
behavior, with emphasis on acquainting the student<br />
with the work of social agencies. Participation in<br />
an original research project is required.<br />
SOCI/PSIC/CIPO 4991. INDEPENDENT<br />
STUDY I. One to three credit hours. Two to four<br />
hours of research per week per credit.<br />
Prerequisites: 12 credit hours in psychology or<br />
sociology or political science, respectively, and<br />
authorization of the Director of the Department.<br />
Research project under the supervision of a faculty<br />
member.<br />
SOCI/PSIC/CIPO 4992. INDEPENDENT STUDY<br />
II. One to three credit hours. Two to four hours of<br />
research per week per credit. Prerequisites: PSIC<br />
4991 or SOCI 4991 or CIPO 4991, respectively,<br />
and authorization of the Director of the<br />

Advanced <strong>Undergraduate</strong> Course<br />
SOCI 5005. SOCIAL ORGANIZATION IN<br />
LATIN AMERICA. Three credit hours. Three<br />
hours of lecture per week. Prerequisite:<br />
Authorization of the Director of the Department.<br />
Sociological processes in Latin America; the racial,<br />
ethnic and cultural elements and their fusion;<br />
characteristics and trends of Latin American<br />
population; European colonization in America; the<br />
structure and functioning of social institutions.<br />
SOCI 4155. SOCIAL AND CULTURAL<br />
CHANGE. Three credit hours. Three hours of<br />
lecture per week. Prerequisite: SOCI 3262 or PSIC<br />
3002 or CIPO 3011 or ANTR 3015.<br />
An examination of the basic sociological principles<br />
of social change. The major points of view will be<br />
presented, and data will be used from the fields of<br />
anthropology, sociology, psychology and history.<br />
Special attention will be given to problems of<br />
cultural contact and several specific areas of change<br />
which involve fundamental social institutions.<br />
