Activities and Services<br />

lectures on personal, emotional, and social<br />

growth topics. A social worker provides direct<br />

assistance to individuals, couples, and families<br />

who request direct intervention with personal<br />

problem solving skills in issues such as<br />

relationship with parents, communication,<br />

violence, marriage, pregnancy, and financial<br />

needs. Workshops are offered throughout the<br />

year to meet student needs. Topics such as stress<br />

management, assertiveness, personal and social<br />

growth, study skills, time management, and<br />

decision-making are discussed.<br />

A Career Resource Office is available to<br />

students. It contains information on<br />

undergraduate and graduate studies.<br />

Occupational information and test applications<br />

for admission to graduate and professional<br />

schools are also available through college<br />

catalogues and bulletins from other institutions.<br />

A counselor assists students in the decisionmaking<br />

process as well as in the application<br />

process for graduate school.<br />

A Tutoring Program offers remedial help<br />

services in basic academic areas such as<br />

mathematics, Spanish, English, chemistry, and<br />

physics. Tutors are selected among honor or<br />

advanced students.<br />

The Counseling Program for Student Athletes<br />

is focused on helping athletes overcome<br />

difficulties resulting from the amount of time<br />

and energy spent on sports.<br />

A Freshman Orientation Week is offered a<br />

week prior to the registration period for the first<br />

semester. It is a campus wide activity in which<br />

new students receive information about facilities,<br />

academic programs, services, and student<br />

organizations. It offers freshmen the opportunity<br />

to meet faculty, staff, and other students.<br />

Members of the Peer Counseling Program<br />

work intensely during this week and throughout<br />

the year in coordination with the Department of<br />

Counseling assisting counselors with campus<br />

tours, group guidance, open house, and career<br />

days.<br />

A Freshman Orientation Course is offered<br />

during the first semester. It consists of a onehour<br />

lecture per week on diverse topics such as<br />

academic regulations, study skills, career<br />

planning, personal development, computer<br />

literacy, and institutional resources. It has been<br />

designed to enhance college students’ academic<br />

and social integration.<br />

The GEO-RUM Technology Training Center<br />

is a new educational service designed to assist<br />

students with computer literacy needs.<br />
