Hispanic Studies and English Education. The<br />
Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered in<br />
Marine Sciences. Additional information<br />
concerning graduate programs may be obtained<br />
by consulting the Graduate <strong>Catalogue</strong>.<br />
Graduation Requirements<br />
The current number of semester hours required<br />
for graduation in each major field is indicated<br />
according to each individual curriculum. In<br />
order to graduate, a student must have a<br />
minimum general 2.00 GPA and a minimum<br />
2.2 GPA in the main area of specialization.<br />
Professional Societies<br />
The American Chemical Society, which has<br />
been selected as outstanding for about two<br />
decades, has had a student affiliate chapter at<br />
<strong>UPRM</strong> since 1948. Students and teachers meet<br />
to conduct scientific and social activities. The<br />
chapter sponsors trips and visits to chemical and<br />
related industries and attends scientific meetings<br />
on the island.<br />
The American Association of Physics<br />
Teachers has a Regional (Puerto Rico) Section<br />
with its nucleus in the Physics Department at<br />
<strong>UPRM</strong>. A joint meeting with the American<br />
Physical Society is held annually in New York<br />
City. Regional Section´s objectives include<br />
improvement in the teaching of physics and<br />
enhancement in the appreciation of its cultural<br />
value. Members meet regularly to discuss<br />
scientific topics.<br />
The Mayagüez student chapter of the Political<br />
Science Association of Puerto Rico not only<br />
fosters research and discussion within campus,<br />
but also provides a link with political science<br />
majors on other campuses.<br />
The Student Nurses Association of the<br />
Commonwealth of Puerto Rico aims to<br />
promote interaction and leadership among<br />
<strong>UPRM</strong> Nursing students and other chapters on<br />
the island.<br />
Phi Alpha Delta has had a very active and<br />
outstanding pre-legal chapter at <strong>UPRM</strong> since the<br />
1980's.<br />
Department-Sponsored<br />
Student Organizations<br />
On May 27, 1945, Beta Beta Beta, an honorary<br />
society for biology majors, organized the Zeta<br />
Alpha Chapter at <strong>UPRM</strong>. Juniors and seniors<br />
with a minimum grade point average of 3.00,<br />
who have shown ability and interest in biological<br />
research are eligible for active membership.<br />
There are other active student associations in the<br />
Departments of Biology, Economics, English,<br />
Geology, Humanities, Mathematics, Physics and<br />
Social Sciences, such as the Pre-medical<br />
Student's Circle, the Psychology Student<br />
Association, the University Philosophy Club, the<br />
History Student Association, the Eugenio María<br />
de Hostos Hispanic Circle, the College Drama<br />
Club, the Dancer's CAAMpany, the Sociology<br />
Student Union, the Environmental Student<br />
Association, and the Physical Education Student<br />
Association.<br />
Advanced Placement<br />
Incoming students may receive advanced<br />
placement in Spanish, English and mathematics<br />
courses if they score a 4 or 5 in the Advanced<br />
Placement Examination. Students should contact<br />
the Associate Dean of Academic and Student<br />
Affairs at the College of Arts and Sciences for<br />
any information related to advanced placement.<br />
