COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING<br />

INEL 4995. ENGINEERING PRACTICE FOR<br />

CO-OP STUDENTS. Zero to six credit hours. A<br />

minimum of two work periods are required for<br />

accreditation of the course, one of which must be a<br />

semester. Prerequisite: Authorization of the<br />

Director of the Department.<br />

Practical experience in electrical engineering in<br />

cooperation with private industry or government to<br />

be jointly supervised by the academic department,<br />

the Co-op Program Coordinator, and an official<br />

from the cooperating organization. A written report<br />

will be required upon completion of each period of<br />

work.<br />

INEL 4998. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH.<br />

One to six credit hours. Three to twenty-four hours<br />

of laboratory per week. Pre-requisite: Fourth or<br />

fifth year student and authorization of the Director<br />

of the Department.<br />

Participation, under the supervision of a faculty<br />

member acting as an investigator, in a research<br />

project.<br />

Advanced <strong>Undergraduate</strong> and Graduate<br />

Courses<br />

INEL 5205. INSTRUMENTATION. Three credit<br />

hours. Three hours of lecture per week.<br />

Prerequisite: INEL 4206 and INEL 4202.<br />

Signals from transducers; signal conditioning, data<br />

conversion and transmission; effects of noise. Data<br />

storage and display; use of microprocessors in<br />

instrumentation.<br />

INEL 5206. DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN.<br />

Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />

week. Prerequisite: INEL 4207.<br />

Design methods in combinational and sequential<br />

systems. Use of programmable logic devices in<br />

digital systems design. Analysis and design of<br />

system controllers.<br />

INEL 5305. ANTENNA THEORY AND<br />

DESIGN. Three credit hours. Three hours of<br />

lecture per week. Prerequisite: INEL 4152 and<br />

INEL 4301.<br />

Radiation mechanism. Types of antennas;<br />

impedance; radiation patterns; arrays. Antenna<br />

measurements.<br />

INEL 5306. MICROWAVE ENGINEERING.<br />

Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />

week. Prerequisite: INEL 4152.<br />

Rectangular and circular wave guides; passive<br />

components; tubes, and solid-state devices used in<br />

microwave systems.<br />

INEL 5307. OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS.<br />

Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />

week. Prerequisites: INEL 4301 and INEL 4152.<br />

Optical communication principles; transmitter and<br />

receiver design; fiber optic channels.<br />

INEL 5309. DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING.<br />

Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />

week. Prerequisite: INEL 4301.<br />

Signal classification; Z-transform and discrete<br />

Fourier transform; matrix representation of digital<br />

filters and digital systems; digital filter design;<br />

discrete Fourier transform algorithms.<br />

INEL 5315. THEORY OF COMMUNICATIONS<br />

II. Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture per<br />

week. Prerequisite: INEL 4011 and INEL 4301.<br />

Information theory; coding theory; signal design;<br />

noise and probability of error.<br />

INEL 5325. COMMUNICATION SYSTEM<br />

DESIGN: CIRCUITS AND ANTENNAS. Three<br />

credit hours. One hour of lecture and two two-hour<br />

laboratories per week. Prerequisite: INEL 5305 or<br />

INEL 5306.<br />

Design of communication circuits and antennas.<br />

Several design projects including: specification,<br />

evaluation and selection of alternatives and<br />

implementation. Written reports and computer use<br />

required.<br />

INEL 5326. COMMUNICATION SYSTEM<br />

DESIGN: SIGNAL PROCESSING. Three credit<br />

hours. One hour of lecture and two two-hour<br />

laboratories per week. Prerequisite: INEL 5309.<br />

Block diagram design and simulation of<br />

communication systems. Design projects<br />

including: specification, evaluation and selection of<br />

alternatives, and implementation. Computer and<br />

laboratory work and written reports required.<br />
