Goldsmiths College, the Caribbean Centre has<br />
been the organising impetus for Londons biennial<br />
Caribbean Womens Literature conference, which<br />
recently brought together a panel of academics<br />
and practising teachers to discuss <strong>Carnival</strong> Arts<br />
within primary, secondary and tertiary education.<br />
Research in this area, informing pedagogic and<br />
Literary practice is of continuing importance to<br />
the work of the centre. The centre’s Caribbean<br />
Studies Research Forum will be formally launched<br />
on Tuesday 10 th July at 6:00pm by Cuban poet<br />
Nancy Morejon.<br />
Claire Holder O.B.E. PGDipCJ, MA, MSc, ACIS<br />
Chief Executive, <strong>Notting</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Carnival</strong> Trust<br />
Claire Holder is a Barrister at Law and a Chartered<br />
Secretary, specialising in the legal management of<br />
companies. She also practised for some fifteen<br />
years as a Criminal Law practitioner and is the<br />
holder of a Postgraduate Diploma in Criminal<br />
Justice with a particular interest in Criminology.<br />
With a Master of Arts in Peace Studies, Ms.<br />
Holder has been a consultant Advocacy Adviser<br />
on international peace and security and conflict<br />
resolution since 1982. She is an Associate<br />
Member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries<br />
and holds a Master of Science in Finance and<br />
Administration with particular interest in<br />
Company Secretarial Practice and Corporate<br />
Governance.<br />
Claire Holder has been involved in the <strong>Notting</strong> <strong>Hill</strong><br />
<strong>Carnival</strong> continuously since 1973 as a Mas maker<br />
with the Ebony Steelband, L& H Wajangs and<br />
Bayie Busuofo; working closely with the <strong>Carnival</strong><br />
Development Committee and <strong>Carnival</strong> Arts<br />
Committee; as the Chairperson of <strong>Notting</strong> <strong>Hill</strong><br />
<strong>Carnival</strong> Limited 1989 – 1997, subsequently<br />
becoming Chief Executive of <strong>Notting</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Carnival</strong><br />
Trust in 1997. In 1979, she completed a mini<br />
thesis on the ‘Conflicts of the <strong>Notting</strong> <strong>Hill</strong><br />
<strong>Carnival</strong>’.<br />
Glen Tee Falconer<br />
Chair, British Association of Sound Systems<br />
Glen is in his third year of being a Director and<br />
Trustee of NHCT. He has been a member of BASS<br />
for approximately 15 years. Glen started Love TKO<br />
sound system in 1971, although at the time it was<br />
called Challenger. They were at the top of the pile<br />
up until the late 1980’s. Glen now works as a self<br />
employed Audio and Broadcast Engineer. He is<br />
also a radio presenter on Fusion 107.3, in South<br />
London as well as Soul 24.7.com on the internet.<br />
Greg Thomas<br />
Director of Arts, London Arts<br />
Greg is the owner of Music Incorporated, a sound<br />
system. He has been in the <strong>Carnival</strong> for a<br />
continuous 12 years, as well as being a BASS<br />
official for a number of those years. Greg has been<br />
active in the music industry since 1980. By trade<br />
he is an aircraft mechanic for British Airline , and is<br />
a cricket coach to National standards. He is active<br />
in both sport and development.<br />
Jennette Arnold<br />
London Assembly Member, Londonwide<br />
Jennette Arnold is a Labour London-wide<br />
Assembly Member. She is the Labour Group lead<br />
on Culture and Civic Engagement. She is a<br />
member of the Mayor’s Cultural Strategy Group<br />
for London and is the former chair of Islington<br />
Borough Council’s Arts and Heritage Committee,<br />
who was a leading funder of Islington<br />
International Festival.<br />
Rt. Hon. Diane Abbott MP<br />
Member of Parliament for Hackney North<br />
Diane Abbott is the Labour MP for Hackney<br />
North and Stoke Newington. She is currently a<br />
member of the Mayor’s Advisory Cabinet and has<br />
been an MP for 14 years, before which she was a<br />
Westminster Councillor from 1982 to 1986.<br />
Diane has been attending <strong>Carnival</strong> for over 20<br />
years.<br />
Commander Michael Messinger<br />
Public Order Branch, Metropolitan Police Service<br />
Commander Michael Messinger of the<br />
Metropolitan Police is responsible for Pan London<br />
Operations, which covers public order, traffic, air<br />
support, mounted branch, dogs and marine<br />
support. He represents the Metropolitan Police on<br />
national committees dealing with public order<br />
policing, self-defence, arrest and restraint and<br />
emergency procedures. He is a member of the<br />
institute of Personnel and Development. In the<br />
1997 Birthday Honours he was awarded the<br />
Queens Police Medal.<br />
Cllr. Kit Malthouse<br />
Westminster City Council<br />
Councillor Kit Malthouse is currently Chairman of<br />
the Social Services Committee and a member of<br />
the Policy & Resources committee. He was<br />
formally Vice-Chairman of the Policy & Resources<br />
Housing Committees. He has, among others, been<br />
a member of the Traffic Sub-Committee and<br />
Finance and Support Services sub-committee. By<br />
occupation, he is a Chartered Accountant and<br />
Finance Director.<br />
