2.23 In total, 3,598 police officers were deployed on the Carnival Sunday and a total of 5,173
officers were deployed on the Bank Holiday Monday at Carnival 2001, representing an
increase of 1,357 officers from Carnival 2000. An officer was also seconded to NHCT to
contribute to and assist in the overall planning and implementation of the stewarding
operation. By way of comparison with other major events in London, in a recent report to the
Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) 58 , the MPS presented the following cost implications of
public order events held throughout 2001 and the May Day Demonstrations in 2002:
