11.7 Conclusion<br />

The gateway functionality enables easy connection to the CAN network without the need of a separate<br />

CAN interface card to monitor a CAN network. Also, wiring of the CAN network does not require alteration.<br />

By simply plugging the USB or RS232 cable into one of the <strong>EPOS2</strong> Positioning Controllers, all<br />

other <strong>EPOS2</strong> devices in the network can be controlled and monitored.<br />

The delay in CAN communication can be neglected when considering the time needed with RS232 baud<br />

rate. Thus, the gateway does not slow down the RS232 communication. Thereby, it does not really<br />

make any difference (except in segmented transfers) whether the master is addressing a device in the<br />

CAN network directly via RS232 or via the gateway.<br />
