A fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g document chart<strong>in</strong>g the taxes and import tariVs applied to all<br />
manner of textiles <strong>in</strong> the PontiWcal States. The tariVs apply to both manufactured<br />
and raw fabrics, and all manner of cloth<strong>in</strong>g, made out of every<br />
conceivable material and <strong>in</strong> all European countries. In alphabetical order<br />
more than a thousand textile products <strong>in</strong> diVerent sizes are listed, their value<br />
is given and then both import and export tax. Values and tariVs applied are<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ted for 30 June 1788, and then corrected upwards <strong>in</strong> manuscript for 11<br />
July 1788, by the ‘stimatore’ Filipp de Felice.<br />
The textile products come from all parts of Italy, with dist<strong>in</strong>ctive price<br />
diVerences between similar sound<strong>in</strong>g products from diVerent regions,<br />
but also from all over Europe, English wool and camel-hair, German felt,<br />
Dutch, French and Spanish products, but also Ch<strong>in</strong>ese silk.<br />
A fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g document both of economic and textile history.<br />
<strong>Rare</strong>, KVK lists two copies <strong>in</strong> Rome, not found <strong>in</strong> OCLC; not <strong>in</strong> Kress, Goldsmiths’<br />

First edition of this detailed priced bookseller catalogue, produced by the<br />
Milan Wrm of Vallardi and prepared by Giuseppe Vallardi (1784–1861).<br />
The catalogue covers both antiquarian and new books, <strong>in</strong> the classical languages,<br />
Italian, and French, English, Spanish, German and Dutch. Over<br />
four thousand titles are arranged <strong>in</strong> subject areas, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with manuscripts,<br />
followed by <strong>in</strong>cunables and early pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, classics <strong>in</strong> Greek and<br />
Lat<strong>in</strong>, then books on Wne art <strong>in</strong> Italian and various other European languages,<br />
followed by miscellaneous scientiWc books aga<strong>in</strong> Wrst <strong>in</strong> Italian, then<br />
other European languages. A special brief section is devoted to Ebraica and<br />
Arabic books, followed by Ald<strong>in</strong>e editions and books pr<strong>in</strong>ted by Com<strong>in</strong>us.<br />
In each case author, title, year, format, number of volumes, number of<br />
illustrations are given, together with the price. Curiously a large number<br />
of sixteenth century books are listed and only very few seventeenth century<br />
ones. The largest proportion are of course n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century books, with<br />
those published by Vallardi marked by an asterisk, for trade discounts. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to the preface an earlier ‘general catalogue’ had been published <strong>in</strong><br />
1823, and there is an even earlier record for 1819.<br />
The Vallardis were also deal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />
OCLC lists a copy at the Grolier Club and the 1823 edition at Georgetown University.<br />
