First edition of a general theory of accountancy and book-keep<strong>in</strong>g, the result<br />
of a prize question posed by the Austrian Emperor <strong>in</strong> 1812, deplor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the lack of a s<strong>in</strong>gle work cover<strong>in</strong>g all Welds of economic mathematics. The<br />
Emperor further requested that the work should serve as a textbook for<br />
schools and also give an outl<strong>in</strong>e of book-keep<strong>in</strong>g for merchants, bankers,<br />
landowners and civil servants <strong>in</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>istry of Wnance. Johann von Puteani<br />
had submitted this work and when no response was forthcom<strong>in</strong>g, he<br />
decided to have it published by Gerold and be judged by the public. He<br />
expla<strong>in</strong>s methods and gives examples for establish<strong>in</strong>g and list<strong>in</strong>g assets and<br />
their commercial values, compil<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ventories, assess<strong>in</strong>g liabilities, estimat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>come of bus<strong>in</strong>esses, manag<strong>in</strong>g accounts, budget<strong>in</strong>g, and draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />
up balance sheets.<br />
The large fold<strong>in</strong>g table displays the relations of prices of diVerent groups<br />
of natural materials, goods and products <strong>in</strong> an economic system, rang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from natural build<strong>in</strong>g stone or leather goods to fertilizers, tar, potassium,<br />
iron and glass – all seen <strong>in</strong> relation to labour as well.<br />

de Passerano, a Piedmontese nobleman had been exiled from Italy for<br />
his attempt to carry to its logical conclusion the conXict between state and<br />
church. He wanted to establish more Wrmly the control of political over<br />
ecclesiastical power, and expressed this demand <strong>in</strong> his Discours moraux, historiques<br />
et politiques. He pursued his vision of a ‘perfect democracy’, <strong>in</strong> which<br />
church and state, government and society would be so fused as to render<br />
men happy and equal <strong>in</strong> nobility, <strong>in</strong> power and <strong>in</strong> wealth. But his proposals<br />
