Fourth edition (Wrst 1719) of Bohn’s inXuential merchants’ handbook, much praised for its comprehensiveness and detail. Beginning with Hamburg, information is given on German and other European trading places, covering exchange rates, weights and measures, products both for import and export, trading practices etc. In addition to this basic information for merchant and trader, a substantial section, extending to 150 pages, contains an introduction to double-entry or Italian book-keeping for merchants based on Rademann. In a conversational style the principles of accounting are given. Practical examples are given, with an explanation as to which account book the transaction needs to be recorded in. In addition to basic accounts, complicated transactions are included too, such as accounting for loans, lotteries, maritime investments. DiVerent account books are introduced and the basic procedures explained. Particularly attractive is the Wne, engraved frontispiece by J. C. G. Fritzsch, showing part of Hamburg’s town hall, the bourse, and the ‘Kommerzbibliothek’ (business library). Bohn’s handbook was the most popular German commercial handbook of the eighteenth century. First edition of this comprehensive practical treatise on bankruptcy law, designed to collect the assets of the debtor with the intention of selling them and distributing the proceeds equitably amongst the creditors. It was only at the beginning of the eighteenth century that this view of bankruptcy resolution came into being, and was transformed from the earlier quasi criminal proceeding to a liquidating device. The present treatise gives a brief general introduction into the question, reprints a couple of earlier bankruptcy regulations, and then concentrates on practical resolution of the liquidation. The main principle is the equitable treatment of the creditors, but with a distinction between oYcial and private creditors. The treatise is clearly designed for oYcials who have to administer debt resolution and bankruptcy proceedings. Numerous individual cases are discussed, and model resolutions are provided. There are provisions for widows and children, who inadvertently got involved in bankruptcy proceedings. The latter part of the work consists of tables, where payments depending on an agreed percentage of the original debt can be checked. The treatise was clearly of use, as it was reprinted in 1757. Not in Kress, Goldsmiths’ or Humpert; a number of copies listed in German libraries, no copies found in the US. Climate and Human Development 17 BONSTETTEN, Charles-Victor de. L’Homme du Midi et L’Homme du Nord, ou L’inXuence du Climat. Geneva, Paschoud, Paris, 1824. £400 8vo, pp. [iv], xiii, [14]–234; contemporary roan-backed boards, spine decorated in gilt, gilt-lettered spine label; joints worn and head of spine chipped. First edition of Bonstetten’s best-known work, his much discussed anthropological study of the inXuence of climate on human development. He assesses the impact of variations in climate on agriculture, political structure, religion, national character, education, and the economy. Despite his broad-brush assessments of the more rational northerners and impulsive southerners, his typology of national characters and psychology of the people remains of interest. Bonstetten (1745–1832), a Swiss writer and government oYcial, was strongly inXuenced by Rousseau and Bonnet. Due to his liberal ideas he catalogue fourteen
