First edition of Joseph Sonnenfels’ Wrst published work, a preface to this<br />

study of the orig<strong>in</strong> of Jewish controversies, and the relations between Judaism<br />

and Christianity by his father, Aloys de Sonnenfels (Perl<strong>in</strong> Lipman).<br />

Sonnenfels, one of the most <strong>in</strong>Xuential m<strong>in</strong>isters of the Hapsburg Empire,<br />

here writes on rabbis and Jewish rites.<br />

Aloys Sonnenfels, son of a Brandenburg rabbi, converted to Catholicism<br />

together with his children sometime between 1735 and 1741. In Vienna<br />

he became a professor of Oriental languages and court <strong>in</strong>terpreter to Maria<br />

Theresia. In 1753 he had published a work <strong>in</strong> defence of the Jewish faith, to<br />

support the Jews of Poland <strong>in</strong> their struggle aga<strong>in</strong>st blood-libel charges.<br />

First and only edition of the rare auction catalogue of Süssmilch’s library, a<br />

substantial collection of more than 5500 titles, together with some pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

library furniture and a few manuscripts. Süssmilch’s library was clearly<br />

an <strong>in</strong>ternational one, and conta<strong>in</strong>ed many of his predecessors’ <strong>in</strong> the Weld<br />

of population study, together with many of his contemporaries. With<strong>in</strong><br />

the Weld of ‘political arithmetic’ we Wnd Graunt, Petty, Davenant, but also<br />

Kersseboom, Deparcieux, Struyck, bills of mortality etc. He had copies of<br />

Froumenteau, Vauban, Montmort, but also Melon and Cantillon. It is of<br />

course impossible to say at what stage <strong>in</strong> his research he would have acquired<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual titles, but many found their way <strong>in</strong>to his observations.<br />
