O’Brien, The Classical Economists, 1975, p. 29). Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments is, in brief, that they are founded not, as Hume said, on self-interest, but on fellow-feeling – the ability one man has to put himself in the place of another, and to judge others by himself and himself by others. Smith’s teleological view of the universe, expounded in the Moral Sentiments, permeates the Wealth, and perhaps the most famous example is to be found in the ‘invisible hand’ of the latter work. ‘The exposition in the Wealth of Nations is much more particularized than that in the Moral Sentiments... It occurs through the beneWcial results of the pursuit of self-interest (within a framework of law and custom) and manifests itself in such phenomena as the division of labour (with its origin in the propensity to barter), money, savings and investment, and trade’, ibid, p. 30. An understanding of Smith’s views on the complex relationship between Sympathy and Self-interest is also to be gained from the study of both works. Second Continental edition of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, and the only edition to include an English translation of Turgot’s Réflexions sur la formation et la distribution des richesses, a work which had a great inXuence on Adam Smith, and which McCulloch describes as ‘the best work on the science published previously to the Wealth of Nations’. This copy has some interesting annotations, including many marginal comments in ink, mostly in English, which were clearly added before the book was bound in its present binding, as the pages needed to be turned in, before the copy was trimmed by the binder. The markings in red and blue crayon are of a later date, and can be attributed to the owner Dr. Bobetz or Bobek, who signed all four volumes, and interestingly dates his progress through the book from 15. First edition of Joseph Sonnenfels’ Wrst published work, a preface to this study of the origin of Jewish controversies, and the relations between Judaism and Christianity by his father, Aloys de Sonnenfels (Perlin Lipman). Sonnenfels, one of the most inXuential ministers of the Hapsburg Empire, here writes on rabbis and Jewish rites. Aloys Sonnenfels, son of a Brandenburg rabbi, converted to Catholicism together with his children sometime between 1735 and 1741. In Vienna he became a professor of Oriental languages and court interpreter to Maria Theresia. In 1753 he had published a work in defence of the Jewish faith, to support the Jews of Poland in their struggle against blood-libel charges. First and only edition of the rare auction catalogue of Süssmilch’s library, a substantial collection of more than 5500 titles, together with some paintings, library furniture and a few manuscripts. Süssmilch’s library was clearly an international one, and contained many of his predecessors’ in the Weld of population study, together with many of his contemporaries. Within the Weld of ‘political arithmetic’ we Wnd Graunt, Petty, Davenant, but also Kersseboom, Deparcieux, Struyck, bills of mortality etc. He had copies of Froumenteau, Vauban, Montmort, but also Melon and Cantillon. It is of course impossible to say at what stage in his research he would have acquired individual titles, but many found their way into his observations. catalogue fourteen
