in St. Petersburg, sumptuously produced and with a more political title,
which pointedly indicates the convergence of private and public interest.
Jovellanus, who had a rather varied political career, was in the late 1790s
called to become Ambassador to Russia, but before he left Spain was made
instead Minister of Justice; shortly afterward, however, he was arrested
again for political reasons and spent the following seven years in exile in
Mallorca.

First edition and only edition, uncommon, of an anonymous work in the
tradition of the ‘dialogues of the dead’, which were exceedingly popular in
Germany in the eighteenth century, after the success of Fassmann’s periodical.
This dialogue juxtaposes three historical Wgures: count von Hoymb, a
diplomat in the service of the elector of Saxony, who committed suicide by
hanging himself, the Duke de Ripperda, a political adventurer, who died
at Tetuan in 1737 after he had been deposed as prime minister of Spain,
and Wnally Süss-Oppenheimer, a German Wnancier and Privy Councilor of
Finance for the Duke of Württemberg, who became the victim of an anti-
Semitic campaign, and was executed in a judicial murder. The dialogues,
