First and only edition of this ‘promotional’ talk on the value of mathematics, not just in everyday life, but in all Welds of science and business. Grünberger stresses the importance of mathematics as a part of general education, encouraging logical thinking and the search for proof, and outlines its inXuence in all Welds of science, industry and exploration. He gives extensive examples from the Welds of mining, surveying, military science, statistics etc., and makes some pertinent remarks on the cross-fertilisation between empirical data and theoretical formulae. He cites extensively from major mathematicians of the time, especially Euler. Grünberger (1749–1820) was professor for mathematics at the Bavarian Agricultural Academy and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences; he also published in scientiWc forestry management. 49 GUDEN, Philipp Peter. Rare Wrst edition of this award-winning dissertation on the active encouragement of industry and commerce, written by a Hanoverian civil servant and proliWc author on insurance mathematics and political economy. Guden covers the entire Weld of political economy, from monetary theory, over the legal framework for a thriving economy to infrastructure (roads, factories, susanne schulz-falster rare books
and the banking system). Of particular interest are his comments on how to encourage productivity. Of primary importance is education and training, both within the guilds and through speciWc economic academies. Guden also suggests prize competitions, industrial exhibitions, and public recognition of achievement, as a vital incentive. Factories should be well designed, and the working environment conducive to productivity. He comments on branches of industry, which are particularly promising, and identiWes the textile industry as a growth industry. He concludes with comments on the improvement of agriculture through smaller units, restrictions on absent landlords, and the introduction of agricultural insurance. First edition, a description of the cabinet of instruments of Johann Georg Heine, the forefather of German orthopaedics. In 1798 Heine was appointed to the post of instrument maker to Würzburg university. In 1816 he founded the Wrst orthopaedic institution in Germany in the former Stephans kloster in Würzburg. In 1822 he was given permission by Queen Caroline of Bavaria to call it the Carolinen-Institute. Contained here are the descriptions of all the instruments and apparatus in the Kabinet at the Institute together with a history of their design, development and use.
