A very attractive, entirely engraved, calligraphic prayer-book, designed and executed by Pierre Moreau, and dedicated to Anne d’Autriche, the wife of Louis XIII. The work is engraved throughout, in each case the richly decorated border is printed from one plate, with the text and imagery printed on a separate plate. Particularly attractive are the depictions of the Seven Deadly sins, the arms of Anne d’Autriche, and numerous (repeated) Xower images. The work was Wrst published in 1631 and was reprinted several times, ie in 1632, 1644, 1649 and 1656, but with some changes and new borders. Moreau is best known as a calligrapher, but also of note for having developed punches and matrices of some new script-types, in the style of handwriting. He dedicated the Wrst proofs of these to Louis XIII, which brought him the title of ‘Imprimeur du Roy’ (Updike I, p. 207). First edition, very rare, of the outline of an academy for public administration, economics and international law to be founded at Hanau and directed by the ‘father of German law’, Johann Jacob Moser (1701–1785). Moser argued that although individual academic subjects could be taught well at universities, this would always be insuYcient practical training for high government oYcials, diplomats or parliamentarians. Instead he proposes the foundation of this academy for university graduates. He includes a clear outline of the curriculum, the time-table with lessons Wve days a week for six months, holidays only for one week during the Frankfurt fair. are on oVer, German law and statecraft, European law and diplomacy, and Wnally business administration. Courses may be taken consecutively. Interestingly he proposes a sliding pay scale, with the nobility subsidising the rising middle classes. Scholarships might also become available. In the second half a more detailed introduction into the curriculum is given. Moser’s proposal for the academy can be seen as a veiled critique of the German university system. Later the same year a second edition was published under the title Wiederholte Nachricht von einer Staats- und Cantzley Academie.
