First edition of the w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g contribution to the prize question of the Gött<strong>in</strong>gen<br />
Academy of 1786. Follow<strong>in</strong>g a number of village Wres, the Academy<br />
requested contributions on the question of how best to plan and design<br />
a village, both for rebuild<strong>in</strong>g the ones damaged by Wre and <strong>in</strong> general for<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g new villages. Eickemeyer proposes a village based on a grid system,<br />
with mixed-sized farms, a centrally located church, school and court<br />
house, and easy access to roads. The outl<strong>in</strong>e is illustrated on the engraved<br />
plates. He also makes some general observations on the ideal location of<br />
such a village, close to a river, at suYcient distance to avoid Xood<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> the<br />
shadow of some hills or mounta<strong>in</strong>s, protected from Werce w<strong>in</strong>ds, but not <strong>in</strong><br />
an area with stagnant waters and its <strong>in</strong>herent dangers.<br />
Eickemeyer (1753–1825) studied mathematics at Gött<strong>in</strong>gen and later<br />
became a well-known army eng<strong>in</strong>eer, and military Wgure.<br />

First edition, uncommon, of two Wnely produced legal essays, fulsomely<br />
presented to Card<strong>in</strong>al Ors<strong>in</strong>i. The Wrst one deals with the importance of<br />
the law <strong>in</strong> civic life. Erioni ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s that the juridical faculty is of utmost<br />
importance <strong>in</strong> the university, as here future public adm<strong>in</strong>istrators are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ed and educated. Even though science and <strong>in</strong>dustry will produce<br />
wealth for the state, lawyers are necessary to guarantee a smooth runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of the system, provide the framework of their operation and settle disputes.<br />
The legal profession is also <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g civic order, and<br />
necessary for the settlement of <strong>in</strong>ternational disputes through negotiation<br />
rather than with the help of weaponry. Throughout he quotes extensively<br />
from legal writers such as Grotius, Muratori, Hobbes, Burlamaqui etc., and<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s that the study of law should be encouraged.<br />
