The printing history of Candide is a complicated one. The Wrst edition was published by Cramer and is described under number 299G by Giles Barber in the critical edition of Candide published as volume 48 of the Complete Works of Voltaire in 1980 by the Voltaire Foundation (Taylor Institution, Oxford). This Wrst edition is very rare indeed, with only about twenty copies recorded. Most of these copies, just like this one, are bound without the Wnal leaves N7, a blank, and N8, instructions to the binder concerning the cancellation of two pairs of leaves (B4/B9) and D6/9D7). All the recorded copies so far, including two recently on the market, have all the cancels in gatherings B and D, with the exception of the copy at the Voltaire Institute in Geneva, which has both these signatures uncancelled. The present copy is unique in that it has the cancels in signature B, but preserves signature D uncancelled. This results in the inelegant sentence ‘toutes nos Wlles se trouvèrent Presque toutes en un moment’, with its repetition of ‘toutes’, (p. 84) (to be corrected in all later printings) and the use of a diVerent ornament on page 86, not ornament g ‘pot of Xowers’ as described in Barber, but instead ornament d, a mixture of fruit and leaves, just as the Geneva copy. I. First edition in French of this fascinating volume of great philosophical and scientiWc interest, which was, in fact partly written in English and Wrst published in English the previous year. It was written by Voltaire as a kind of testimony of his love of ‘things English’, and then subsequently partly rewritten in French for the French editions. Buruma observes that Voltaire invented a new genre: instead of writing an ordinary travel book, he approached his subject as an intellectual traveller and wrote a journey of ideas. show what Englishmen thought. Much of what he admired about England and the English was, of course, taken as criticism of his own country, and some attempts were made to suppress this French version. The letters that Brown suggests were composed in French were those dealing with philosophy and science [9, 11, 13–17, 20], and include the important letters on Newton and Descartes, with the famous anecdote of Newton and the falling apple. One of a number of editions of Voltaire’s philosophical and utopian tale published in the year of the Wrst edition. In the style of Gulliver’s Travels, Voltaire’s tale exposes human pretentions by looking at them from the outside. The title character is a giant from the planet Sirius who, accompanied by a slightly smaller but still enormous companion from Saturn, visits Earth to investigate it and its inhabitants. When they Wrst arrive, the Earth appears void of any inhabitants; only the use of a magnifying diamond allows them to see some humans, who appear microscopic. Micromégas is shocked and surprised by the folly and cruelty of humanity, but impressed by their scientiWc advances. The two other works, the essay on the crusades and the ‘new plan’, had both Wrst appeared in periodicals, and were to be incorporated in Voltaire’s major historical work Essai sur les Moeurs.
