This was apparently inspired by an earlier publication published in Reading entitled Handbuch für Deutsche, (1819), and was designed to help resident German speakers and recent arrivals to compose business and legal letters. Sample letters are given in German and English. A detailed contents list of the respective constitutions concludes the work. There were, of course, earlier German translations of the American Constitution, but it is rather attractive to have it in this form of a ‘citizen’s manual’ for recent immigrants. First edition, rare of this detailed contemporary account of the 1783 bombardment of Algiers by the Spanish Xeet under the commandment of Admiral Don Angelo Barcelò. Interestingly the reports from both sides of the battle are reprinted, the ‘Giornale Spagnolo’ and the ‘Giornale Algerino’. The Wne engraved plates show a view of Algiers, with its main buildings, and the location of the battle ships in the bay facing Algiers; and a detailed view of the bombardment under Barcelò, again with a detailed legend. susanne schulz-falster rare books
From the mid-sixteenth century the port of Algiers had been the main base of the Barbary pirates. Repeated attempts were made over the centuries by various European powers to take Algiers and subdue the pirates, of which this 1783 raid was another – unsuccessful – Spanish attempt. It was not until 1830, when the city was attacked by the French army, and eventually had to surrender, that piracy was stopped. OCLC lists one copy at New York Public Library. First edition, elegantly printed, of Arco’s elogio on his cousin Carlo count Firmian (1718–1782), a writer, diplomat, councillor of Maria Theresia and the minister plenipotentiary of Austrian Lombardy. Throughout his career the economist Arco (1739–1791), who himself came from a noble family, was particularly critical of the privileges of the nobility. However, here he Wrst delineates the illustrious heritage of his cousin and gives details of his political achievements, before underlining the responsibility of the nobility to serve as an example of virtue and uprightness to the people. The extensive library of count Firmian was dispersed to meet substantial debts, and was partly acquired by the Milan library La Braidense. Count Firmian had not only an important role to play as the representative of enlightened Austrian government in Lombardy, but he was also closely involved in the re-organisation of university education. First edition of this detailed study of the function of torture in criminal law, in the wake of the Constitutio Criminalis Theresiana, which had regulated the use of torture, and had provided speciWc guide lines as to which kind of torture could be used for which oVence, or in which investigation. Banniza gives a detailed overview of the use and legality of torture, and in particular takes issue with the more liberal opinions of Beccaria, who rejected torture as a means of extracting confessions. Throughout Banniza cites repeatedly from Beccaria’s Dei Delitti e delle Pene. catalogue fourteen
