its success repr<strong>in</strong>ted here by a professional publisher. A Danish translation<br />

followed the same year, and a second German edition <strong>in</strong> 1793. The work<br />

met with great approval <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Vienna and the<br />

Hague (Gradmann, p. 369).<br />

OCLC lists just three copies, at the Society of the C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati, Newberry Library,<br />

Beware of Napoleon<br />

8vo, pp. 47, [1] blank; uncut <strong>in</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al pr<strong>in</strong>ted wrappers, with<br />

errata on lower wrapper, pr<strong>in</strong>ted on pale blue paper; wrappers a little<br />

dog-eared and with fa<strong>in</strong>t damp traces; an attractive copy.<br />

First edition of Mellish’s only political work. Mellish, an English diplomat<br />

and Prussian Kammerherr liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Weimar, here issues a general warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st trust<strong>in</strong>g Napoleon’s promises, and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s that his political <strong>in</strong>tentions<br />

are clearly expansionist. With some foresight Mellish warns that only<br />

a united Europe will be able to resist Napoleon: ‘Ganz Europa muss sich<br />

bald vere<strong>in</strong>igen, Bonaparte <strong>in</strong> Schranken zu halten, oder zufrieden seyn <strong>in</strong><br />

dem allgeme<strong>in</strong>en Namen Frankreichs den Namen Europa verschlungen zu<br />

sehen.’<br />

Joseph Charles Mellish (1769–1823), was educated at Eton and Cambridge<br />

and admitted to L<strong>in</strong>coln’s Inn. He became British Consul at Louisiana<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1809, and later held the same position <strong>in</strong> Hamburg. He is best<br />

known for his translations of Goethe and Schiller.<br />
