Second edition, Wrst published the year before, of this comprehensive treatise on the practicalities of army life, the art of planning and laying-out encampments, details of basic equipment and how to arrange it, army beds, Weld kitchens etc. The large folding plates show encampments, army tents, storage for riXes, a perfectly made-up army camp bed, cooking equipment etc. In his charming introduction, Medicus writes that he aims to provide information all oYcers need, but may be too embarrassed to ask for, for fear of losing face. Medicus (1743–1794), a professional army oYcer, was major and chief of the Baden light cavalry (Husarencorps). This is his only publication, susanne schulz-falster rare books
the Wrst edition was privately published the year before, and because of its success reprinted here by a professional publisher. A Danish translation followed the same year, and a second German edition in 1793. The work met with great approval in Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Vienna and the Hague (Gradmann, p. 369). OCLC lists just three copies, at the Society of the Cincinnati, Newberry Library, and Göttingen; Gradmann, Das gelehrte Schwaben, p. 369. Beware of Napoleon 77 MELLISH, Joseph Charles. Eine Brille für kurzsichtige Politiker von Joseph Charles Mellish von Blyth in der Grafschaft Nottingham, Esquire, Königlich-Preussischem Kammerherrn. [n.p., n.p.] [Hildburghausen], February, 1804. £320 8vo, pp. 47, [1] blank; uncut in the original printed wrappers, with errata on lower wrapper, printed on pale blue paper; wrappers a little dog-eared and with faint damp traces; an attractive copy. First edition of Mellish’s only political work. Mellish, an English diplomat and Prussian Kammerherr living in Weimar, here issues a general warning against trusting Napoleon’s promises, and maintains that his political intentions are clearly expansionist. With some foresight Mellish warns that only a united Europe will be able to resist Napoleon: ‘Ganz Europa muss sich bald vereinigen, Bonaparte in Schranken zu halten, oder zufrieden seyn in dem allgemeinen Namen Frankreichs den Namen Europa verschlungen zu sehen.’ Joseph Charles Mellish (1769–1823), was educated at Eton and Cambridge and admitted to Lincoln’s Inn. He became British Consul at Louisiana in 1809, and later held the same position in Hamburg. He is best known for his translations of Goethe and Schiller.
