Doria’s work was reprinted in 1798, and this Wrst edition appears to be very rare. [Provenance:] The arms of the binding are those of the Roman noble family Altieri. The Altieri family produced over the centuries a pope, Clemens X, cardinals, and other important personages in Rome. The artist who made the binding was almost certainly a Roman binder. First edition of this comprehensive study of the law concerning domestic servants, farm labourers, hired servants and day labourers, expanded from the doctoral dissertation of the author. Dorn begins with an extensive overview of existing legislation and its historical background, based on the feudal system, and adds a detailed bibliography of relevant legal publications. In individual chapters direct and indirect obligations of servants to masters are discussed, including a chapter on forced labour, labour in lieu of debt, etc., followed by those of the masters. These include detailed provisions for fair treatment, provisions for health care etc. A special section is devoted to the end of the working agreement, and its legal provisions, again viewed from both sides. A whole list of legitimate reasons for prematurely ending a working agreement is given, ranging from cruelty, to forthcoming marriage or inheritance on the side of the servants, and bankruptcy, long travel or change of circumstances in the case of the employers. A Wnal chapter gives details of various privileges of the servants, such as tax-free earnings, loyalty payments for long service, which in some municipalities also entailed full citizen’s rights, and the provision that in case of bankruptcy of the employer, payment of the servants took precedence over other obligations.
