Comenius (1592–1670) was the pioneer of contemporary developments<br />
<strong>in</strong> education, his proposals and maxims have shaped educational th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ever s<strong>in</strong>ce, and, even though some of his suggested methods are outdated,<br />
his Wnal goals are still valid today and some have still not been completely<br />
atta<strong>in</strong>ed. To mention just some of his pronouncements regard<strong>in</strong>g education:<br />
he stressed the importance of pre-school education with<strong>in</strong> the family,<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed that education had to be pleasurable to be eVective, proclaimed<br />
life-long education, and demanded <strong>in</strong>ternational education for the <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
community of nations. Everybody should learn two languages, his<br />
own vernacular language and a ‘l<strong>in</strong>gua franca’, which at the time was clearly<br />
Lat<strong>in</strong>. All these demands have a surpris<strong>in</strong>gly modern r<strong>in</strong>g to them and are<br />
all conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> modern textbooks of education.<br />
This is one of three states pr<strong>in</strong>ted the same year with diVerent comb<strong>in</strong>ations<br />
of names <strong>in</strong> the impr<strong>in</strong>t and diVerent signatories <strong>in</strong> the dedication.<br />
Here the dedication is signed by Anchor and Comenius, but not Sam.<br />

teach children their own language, Lat<strong>in</strong>, and any other language,<br />
together with a basic knowledge of arts and sciences. This four-language<br />
edition comprises Lat<strong>in</strong>, German, French and Italian, and is attractively<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> double columns (with German <strong>in</strong> black letter and Italian <strong>in</strong> italics),<br />
so that each page open<strong>in</strong>g shows Lat<strong>in</strong> and German on the left and<br />
French and Italian on the right. The book is divided <strong>in</strong>to one hundred lessons<br />
and covers one thousand topics. The work concludes with extensive<br />
<strong>in</strong>dices <strong>in</strong> all four languages.<br />
