First and only edition of this rare proposal for an innovative Wre insurance scheme. Fezer begins with an analysis of existing Wre insurance schemes. He rejects all of them, because they either distribute the insurance burden too unevenly, encourage risky behaviour of those who have insurance, or increase the damage done by major Wres. Instead he proposes a combined scheme, which insists on a Wxed base capital of the insurance company, with the provision that this base capital may never be used up completely, and Wnally the payment of insurance excess for every claim, to encourage responsible behaviour by the claimants. Fezer encourages compulsory insurance, and maintains the capital can be built up through small regular contributions, and supplemented by property and similar taxes. In eVect the insurance should work like a bank, where the deposited funds may be utilised before their due date. In his contrib utions he includes extensive details of other insurance schemes, both in Germany and abroad. First and apparently only edition of an interesting compilation of all the deeds and legal documents relating to a particular house and grounds in Paris from 1644. In minute detail every change of ownership, change of use and modiWcation of the building and the adjoining land of no. 12, rue de Rochefoucault is documented, and is thus of great interest to architectural and legal historians alike. The property changed ownership through sale, inheritance, and division. It seems astonishing how often the property was in fact sold oV. Early documents allowing the building of fences and walls are also included, as are local tax obligations, and exact Wnancial details of later property transactions. This curious publication was written by the Marquis de Fortia d’Urban (1756–1843), the owner of the property in the early nineteenth century. Descending from one of the oldest Catalan families, he excelled as a student at the Paris military academy. However, instead of pursuing a military career, he spent his life as an independent writer, historian and scientist, and was a member of numerous literary and scientiWc societies. He wrote on history, mathematics and geography, among them a well-known history of China. OCLC lists no copies in America, and just two copies in Paris libraries. First edition in Italian of Frederick the Great’s satirical funeral oration on the death of the cobbler and shoemaker Jacob Mathias Reinold, translated from the French by the Italian Enlightenment philosopher, the count Algarotti. Frederick used the occasion to praise his workmanship, dedication and honesty, and, by extension, bourgeois civic values. He combined it with an underlying criticism of the corruption of the aristocracy. Melzi 1848; rare, OCLC lists copies at UCLA and Toronto.
