The anonymous author Wrst traces the history of the alphabet and writ<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

sharpen<strong>in</strong>g of pens and the preparation of <strong>in</strong>k, both coloured and gold or<br />
silver. All manner of <strong>in</strong>gredients go <strong>in</strong>to the preparation of the coloured<br />
<strong>in</strong>ks, and for every colour a number of diVerent recipes are given, with<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation of their orig<strong>in</strong>. Special chapters deal with the preparation of<br />
the writ<strong>in</strong>g surface, be it paper, vellum or metal. The second half deals with<br />
ciphers, cryptography, and the use of a variety of secret or esoteric writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
systems, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Trithemius’ cryptographic system.<br />
Communication systems which do not <strong>in</strong>volve the written word are also<br />
described, such as messages conveyed with the help of bells, coughs etc.<br />
A whole chapter is devoted to memory games and puzzles of all k<strong>in</strong>ds,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g number games, anagrams, and mnemonics. Numbers take up the<br />
Wnal sections, with an explanation of diVerent regional number<strong>in</strong>g systems,<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation on arithmetic, and a perpetual calendar.<br />
