First edition in French, rare, of Beccaria’s Ricerche intorno alla Natura dello
Stile, his main contribution to philosophy and aesthetics. The translation
was prepared by Morellet, who also translated his Dei Delitti e delle Pene,
Beccaria’s inXuential work on criminology which revolutionized the modern
penal system.
Beccaria discusses in detail the relationship between form and content.
He had included a preliminary article on the subject in the periodical Il
Caffè. His concept of ideas or sentiments is clearly based on seventeenthcentury
sensationalist philosophy. In the tradition of Vico, he identiWes
‘primitive’ style, as the most forceful and immediate. Beccaria rejected the
archaisms and rhetoric of the Vocabolario della Crusca in favour of a language
closer to common usage.

First edition of Bernoulli’s introduction to physical anthropology, with the
Wrst volume dealing with human physiology, the second with the development
of the physical person with reference to stages in human development.
The Wnal part contains the natural history of man, with a curious
chapter analysing the adaptability of man by comparing the physiology of
an equatorial African with that of an inhabitant of the polar regions.
The Swiss natural scientist Christoph Bernoulli (1782–1862), descended
from the famous Basel Bernoulli family, studied at Göttingen and taught
school at Halle, before returning to Basel, where he founded a technical
institute. By 1818 he became professor at the university of Basel, Wrst of
natural history, later of industrial sciences, and published extensively on
natural science and social statistics.
