J. A. Pasteur, who himself issued a type specimen <strong>in</strong> 1823. The larger part<br />

of it became property of the Wrm of Laurent, Balzac & Barbier, best-known<br />

for the novelist’s <strong>in</strong>volvement.<br />

A number of other copies of this type specimen exist, Aud<strong>in</strong> describes<br />

one (less complete), and there is a copy at the St Bride’s <strong>Pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Library,<br />

and another one described <strong>in</strong> Birrell & Garnett (more comprehensive); all<br />

of them diVer somewhat <strong>in</strong> their composition. This particular example conta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

all of the rarest items, i.e. the prospectus, the s<strong>in</strong>gle sheet engrav<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the press, and <strong>in</strong> particular the large fold<strong>in</strong>g type-specimen.<br />
