A brief history of writ<strong>in</strong>g systems is followed by detailed annotations<br />
to the engraved plates. The Wrst two plates are particularly attractive, and<br />
show a male and female Wgure demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g the correct writ<strong>in</strong>g position<br />
and how to hold the hand. Further plates illustrate how to cut the quill,<br />
and how to execute the basic strokes <strong>in</strong> diVerent writ<strong>in</strong>g styles. Sample<br />
alphabets are given.<br />
This calligraphy and handwrit<strong>in</strong>g manual is taken from an Italian edition<br />
of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, orig<strong>in</strong>ally published <strong>in</strong> Geneva by C.<br />
J. Panckoucke <strong>in</strong> 1783–90. The plates are copied from the French version,<br />
which <strong>in</strong> turn had been copied from those <strong>in</strong> the Wrst edition of Diderot and<br />
d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, which makes Paillasson’s work the most widespread<br />
and popular of all writ<strong>in</strong>g-books.<br />

First edition of the Wrst practical treatise on the woodcut. It is famous for a<br />
series of Wve progressive plates show<strong>in</strong>g the successive stages of pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
chiaroscuro woodcut. The Wrst volume of the treatise deals with the history<br />
of pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and illustration. Volume II deals with the methods of wood cutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> detail with clear illustrations of tools and procedures, it also <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation on design, perspective, and pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. Volume III, the supplement,<br />
is autobiographical and also conta<strong>in</strong>s various testimonials, table of<br />
contents and errata.<br />
Papillon (1698–1776), who came from a family of well-known wood<br />
engravers, was one of the best French designers and engravers of woodcuts<br />
for book work, employed by both French and Dutch publishers. The Traité<br />
can be seen as a showcase for his work with its 136 woodcut head and tail<br />
pieces and 257 other illustrations, large and small, <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> the text<br />
– only the portrait is by another hand.<br />
