First edition, rare, of this comprehensive guide to Danish population
Wgures, northern European economic production and history compiled by
August von Hennings, Christian Ulrich Detlev von Eggers and Christian
Ulrich Dau. Of particular interest are the two volumes which are exclusively
devoted to Danish and Norwegian population development, with
thirty large folding population tables, giving detailed birth and mortality
rates for the period from 1735 to 1784, with compara tive analysis over 50
years and the last 15 years. Figures for towns and cities are given separately.
For Copenhagen the Wgures are even more detailed and cover a period
of over a hundred years, again with plenty of comparative data. The mortality
Wgures are accompanied for part of the period with information on
the causes of death, following the classiWcations of Hensler and Süßmilch.
For comparative reasons the mortality details for London and Berlin are
also given, with a special comparative table of accidental deaths in either
city. These accidental deaths include executions, falling oV a horse or being
kicked by one, rabies, being killed by a mob, and suVocation on a
cherry, to mention but a few.
Hennings, Eggeers and Dau provide a wealth of statistical data, which
is then analysed in the accompanying volume of essays, exploring reasons
for sinking population Wgures, and giving extensive production Wgures,
which explain the dismal economic situation of the country’s population
and explain subsequent emigration.
The other two volumes concentrate on historical and economic questions.
In individual chapters decisive historical events in the history of
Norway, Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein are discussed, with a long biographical
essay on Graf Bernstein, and plenty of economic statistical data
on the area covered.
Hennings (1746–1826), an economist and lawyer, had travelled in Jutland
in the 1770s and 80s which formed the basis of this collection of essays.
He held a civil servant position in Copenhagen.
Goldsmiths’–Kress 12557.4, but with the note that the Goldsmiths’ copy is incomplete,
lacking volume II which contains the population section. OCLC lists a copy
at NEHA (just 2 volumes).
