First edition of the Hessian penal code, clearly based on the Carolina. The Hessian ‘Peinliche Gerichtsordnung’ was adopted in 1609 under Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse, and covered both civil and criminal law. It codiWed juridical and inquisitorial principles, the rules for circumstantial evidence, and the use of torture in criminal investigations. Individual chapters deal with all manner of murder and manslaughter, including infanticide, but also robbery, treason, arson, witchcraft etc. A separate section covers theft and robbery, and the investigations and criminal procedures related to it. First edition of this uncommon introduction to the Turkish language, apparently one of the earliest such handbooks. Aimed at the business man and traveller, Hindoglu, a native speaker of both Turkish and Armenian, and resident in Vienna gives a thorough, but practical introduction to the main components of the Turkish language, pronunciation, and grammar. He points out that his phonetic transcription is based on actual spoken Turkish, rather than written Turkish, as was common at the time. An extensive section is devoted to Turkish-German dialogues, printed in three columns, with a transcription in Roman letters. The last section contains a German-Turkish, a Turkish-German dictionary, and a phonetic Turkish-German dictionary, which must have been of particular use to the traveller. Hindoglu also published a number of Turkish-French dictionaries and grammars, but this work appears to be his earliest contribution. Zenker I, 315 (later edition); not in Bonaparte. First edition of this manual of statecraft, a kind of courtesy book for princes, high civil servants, or aspiring politicians. Supported by quotations from classical and contemporary authors, political conduct is described in 140 short paragraphs. Honvlez takes a good general education for granted, and then advises restraint and humility, justice and fairness, stresses the importance of making friends in the right places. A certain cynicism is noticeable, he advises innocuous opinions rather than making enemies, joviality and polite behaviour to all, recommends independent wealth, as that makes it easier to resist bribes, and warns never to teach others all one knows, as that breeds competition. Honvlez, also called Adolph Baron von Hüpsch (1730–1805), is best known as a writer and dedicated collector of books, artefacts and Wne art. He bequeathed his extensive collections to the Darmstadt court museum and library, where they form the basis of its collections.
