A speech <strong>in</strong> praise of <strong>in</strong>dustrial exhibitions by the m<strong>in</strong>ister of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terior concludes the work. The prize w<strong>in</strong>ners came from a wide range<br />

of <strong>in</strong>dustries: textile <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>en, silk, and cotton weav<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g; scientiWc and medical <strong>in</strong>struments; but also food<br />

and w<strong>in</strong>e production. Throughout Europe governments subsidized and<br />

encouraged <strong>in</strong>dustrial exhibitions <strong>in</strong> the hope of stimulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustrialisation<br />

and exports. Prizes were given and reports published to extend the<br />

impact of the exhibition beyond its actual runn<strong>in</strong>g time. The Wrst record of<br />

an exhibition report for Milan is apparently for 1808.<br />

Goldsmiths’–Kress 20257.5 lists an earlier report of 1810, not found <strong>in</strong> E<strong>in</strong>audi<br />

or Mattioli; Carpenter European Industrial Exhibitions before 1851 and their Publications,<br />

p. 483 lists only later reports for anywhere <strong>in</strong> Italy.<br />

First edition of this important contribution to the study of anthropology,<br />

the philosophy of the human be<strong>in</strong>g accord<strong>in</strong>g to his corporal disposition,<br />

Johann Samuel Ith’s ma<strong>in</strong> work. Ith was one of the ma<strong>in</strong> representatives of<br />

romantic anthropology. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to v. Humboldt he attempts to describe<br />

<strong>in</strong> it Wrst ‘what is corporal, physiological, then the spiritual, psychological,<br />

and then the human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> relation to physical objects around him’. Ith’s<br />

studies proved a major <strong>in</strong>Xuence on v. Humboldt’s work on comparative<br />

anthropology.<br />

The Swiss philosopher, theologian and anthropologist Ith (1747–1813)<br />

studied at Gött<strong>in</strong>gen and Berl<strong>in</strong>, and later returned to Bern to teach at<br />

the Academy. Here he became <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the reform of the Bern school<br />

system.<br />
