einer sonderbaren Geschichte. Prague, Johann Hertl, 1794. £480
8vo, pp. 47; a little dust-soiled; paper spine.
First and only edition of an uncommon alchemical tale on the transmutation
of common metals into silver or gold. The anonymous author describes
the story of an itinerant alchemist who manages to produce silver
and gold, which is then used in coinage. This was apparently sparked by
the debates in the early 1760s about the replacement of gold coins with
combined gold and silver coins, which led to a general fear of the devaluation
of coinage, and demands for the restoration of full weight coins. The
alchemist Stahl, who is the main protagonist, is presumably based on the
historical Wgure Stahl (1659–1734), the originator of the phlogiston theory
in the tradition of Becher, which dominated chemistry in the eighteenth
century. Throughout detailed chemical recipes are given, and much reference
is made to major chemical and alchemical writers, such as Becher,
Kunkel, Paracelsus, and Welling.
