In Erzählung einer sonderbaren Geschichte. Prague, Johann Hertl, 1794. £480 8vo, pp. 47; a little dust-soiled; paper spine. First and only edition of an uncommon alchemical tale on the transmutation of common metals into silver or gold. The anonymous author describes the story of an itinerant alchemist who manages to produce silver and gold, which is then used in coinage. This was apparently sparked by the debates in the early 1760s about the replacement of gold coins with combined gold and silver coins, which led to a general fear of the devaluation of coinage, and demands for the restoration of full weight coins. The alchemist Stahl, who is the main protagonist, is presumably based on the historical Wgure Stahl (1659–1734), the originator of the phlogiston theory in the tradition of Becher, which dominated chemistry in the eighteenth century. Throughout detailed chemical recipes are given, and much reference is made to major chemical and alchemical writers, such as Becher, Kunkel, Paracelsus, and Welling. Square 12mo, pp. 102, [2] errata, with 42 mounted specimens; some oV-setting from the specimens, else clean; original green publisher’s cloth, with title blocked in gilt on upper board, within blind-stamped border, binding a little rubbed; with the book-plate and signature of William Wallford, dated August 1855. First edition, very uncommon, of this charming natural history specimen book, with forty-two seaweed specimens included. All the varieties of seaweed to be found on the Channel coast in Margate and Ramsgate are described and accompanied by a specimen, with the exception of a few which were deemed to be too common or too large for inclusion. The book was compiled by Elizabeth Jane Allom, a life-long resident of Margate. She later published a volume of verse (1844) and a juvenile handbook, entitled Seaside pleasures (1845).
