His proposal marked the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the grow<strong>in</strong>g emphasis and reliance<br />
on <strong>in</strong>ternational relations and organisations <strong>in</strong> modern politics. Even<br />
though he was ma<strong>in</strong>ly admired as a visionary <strong>in</strong> his time, his ideas can be<br />
traced <strong>in</strong> the charters of the League of Nations and the United Nations. His<br />
paciWst plan was highly <strong>in</strong>Xuential amongst the <strong>in</strong>tellectuals of his and later<br />
times. ‘Rousseau published <strong>in</strong> 1761 Extrait du projet de paix perpétuelle which<br />
assured Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Pierre European recognition. In addition to Rousseau, of the<br />
truly famous French writers of the century, Montesquieu and Voltaire also<br />
voiced op<strong>in</strong>ions about the Abbé’s projects... Kant knew Rousseau’s version<br />
of the Paix perpetuelle, and <strong>in</strong> his Zum ewigen Frieden expresses similar ideas<br />
(M. L. Perk<strong>in</strong>s, The Moral and Political Philosophy of the Abbé de Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Pierre,<br />
Geneva, 1959).<br />

First edition of this rare contribution to the study of anthropology, the true<br />
science of man. Chavannes was <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> the history of civilisations,<br />
sketch<strong>in</strong>g the progress of the human m<strong>in</strong>d from ‘darkness to light’, and<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed that the development of the <strong>in</strong>dividual mirrored the development<br />
of civilisation <strong>in</strong> general. He <strong>in</strong>cludes both ‘anatomical’ and ‘physical’<br />
studies, and gives a comprehensive assessment subdivided <strong>in</strong>to n<strong>in</strong>e<br />
chapters, cover<strong>in</strong>g anthropology, ethnology, but also extensive chapters on<br />
human speech, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g lexicology and grammar, and human psychology<br />
and mythology. Chavannes was <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g the laws of the<br />
general development of humank<strong>in</strong>d, of identify<strong>in</strong>g the cultural identity of<br />
man. Chavannes is regarded as one the Wrst to use the term ethnology.<br />
After study<strong>in</strong>g philosophy and theology Chavannes (1731–1800) became<br />
professor at Lausanne Academy. He is regarded as one of the ma<strong>in</strong><br />
representatives of the early development of anthropology and ethnology.<br />
