Later edition of an often-produced guide to workshop recipes for the production<br />
and application of lacquers and varnishes, Wrst published <strong>in</strong> 1708.<br />
Amongst others, recipes for lacquer<strong>in</strong>g engrav<strong>in</strong>gs and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, wooden<br />
furniture, and other surfaces are given, with details both of their composition<br />
and application. Colour recipes, both simple and marbled, gilt,<br />
perfumed, and with vary<strong>in</strong>g Wnishes are described with detailed recipes,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those us<strong>in</strong>g ‘gummi copal’, a k<strong>in</strong>d of fossilised tree res<strong>in</strong>, together<br />
with recipes for Ch<strong>in</strong>ese lacquer and Venetian lacquer, surfaces for mirrors,<br />
various types of glue, and methods for transferr<strong>in</strong>g engrav<strong>in</strong>gs onto glass.<br />
This is <strong>in</strong>terspersed with general recipes for secrets, such permanent and<br />
vanish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>k, and medical ones, such as snuV, remedies for nose-bleeds,<br />
fever and other ailments.<br />
At the time, this k<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>in</strong>formation would have been regarded as a<br />
trade secret and the anonymous author refers to it <strong>in</strong> his <strong>in</strong>troduction. He<br />
blames the masters of the trade for keep<strong>in</strong>g this vital <strong>in</strong>formation secret,<br />
and charg<strong>in</strong>g huge sums <strong>in</strong> apprenticeship premiums, even though the basic<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciples could be learnt with<strong>in</strong> a week – as he sets out to prove <strong>in</strong> this<br />
manual. Despite frequent repr<strong>in</strong>ts, presumably with slightly vary<strong>in</strong>g recipes,<br />
not many copies of this workshop manual have survived.<br />
