The Wrst part of the auction catalogue conta<strong>in</strong>s his theological collection<br />

(as is to be expected <strong>in</strong> a clergyman), the second law, medic<strong>in</strong>e, philosophy,<br />

mathematics, history and literature, antiquities, language and grammar, literature<br />

and art. The books are arranged by size, and author, title, and date<br />

is given, as is the type of b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g. In some <strong>in</strong>stances rarity of Wne b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

are noted.<br />

Süssmilch (1708–67), is best known for Die göttliche Ordnung, his classic<br />

contribution to the study of population Wgures and demography – the earliest<br />

work which can be described as ‘statistical’ <strong>in</strong> the modern sense.<br />

The catalogue was compiled and annotated by the German encyclopedist<br />

Johann Georg Krünitz (1728–1796), who was work<strong>in</strong>g on his Oeconomische<br />

Encyclopaedie, a massive undertak<strong>in</strong>g extend<strong>in</strong>g to 242 volumes, only<br />

72 of which he managed to see through the press.<br />
