Second edition, Wrst published the year before, of this comprehensive treatise<br />

on the practicalities of army life, the art of plann<strong>in</strong>g and lay<strong>in</strong>g-out<br />

encampments, details of basic equipment and how to arrange it, army beds,<br />

Weld kitchens etc. The large fold<strong>in</strong>g plates show encampments, army tents,<br />

storage for riXes, a perfectly made-up army camp bed, cook<strong>in</strong>g equipment<br />

etc. In his charm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>troduction, Medicus writes that he aims to provide<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation all oYcers need, but may be too embarrassed to ask for, for<br />

fear of los<strong>in</strong>g face.<br />

Medicus (1743–1794), a professional army oYcer, was major and chief<br />

of the Baden light cavalry (Husarencorps). This is his only publication,<br />
