The work is based on Schultze’s earlier (1748) Orientalisch- und occidentalischer<br />

Sprachmeister, which also conta<strong>in</strong>ed the Lord’s Prayer <strong>in</strong> multiple<br />

languages, and was edited by Johann Friedrich Fritz. Some of the engraved<br />

plates were apparently reused, giv<strong>in</strong>g both plate count (for the 1748 edition)<br />

and page number for this edition. Schultze (1689–1760) studied at<br />

Halle and <strong>in</strong> 1719 went out to the Tranquebar Mission and learnt the Malabar<br />

dialect. He worked on the translation of the Tamil bible and studied<br />

numerous other Indian languages. He returned to Halle <strong>in</strong> 1743 to become<br />

director of the Halle orphanage, part of the famous Francke’sche Stiftungen<br />

(Francke Foundations), a highly important charitable foundation, pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

press, and missionary establishment.<br />

The work can also be used as a type-specimen of the famous German<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g house of Gessner, show<strong>in</strong>g extensive hold<strong>in</strong>gs of exotic type.<br />

First edition of this uncommon study of women, as regards their physical,<br />

moral and social characteristics, and draw<strong>in</strong>g comparisons between women<br />

<strong>in</strong> France and those <strong>in</strong> Italy. Scrofani approaches his topic scientiWcally,<br />

quotes extensively from European authors, and describes <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

chapters female beauty, education, fashion, luxury, ambition, jealousy, capriciousness,<br />

vanity and love. He attempts to identify national characteristics,<br />

such as a greater propensity to gambl<strong>in</strong>g, or to fall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> love <strong>in</strong> French<br />

women, but also Wnds many characteristics which are similar <strong>in</strong> both countries.<br />

In the course of his argument he gives a detailed <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to post<br />

revolutionary society.<br />

Salverio Scrofani (1756–1837) was a Sicilian priest and economist, and<br />

one time professor of agriculture at Venice, who lived for a few years <strong>in</strong><br />

Paris after the destruction of the Venetian republic. This allowed him to<br />

make comparisons at Wrst hand, which also reXected on some of his other,<br />

economic and political, publications.<br />
