First edition of this comprehensive practical treatise on bankruptcy law,<br />

designed to collect the assets of the debtor with the <strong>in</strong>tention of sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

them and distribut<strong>in</strong>g the proceeds equitably amongst the creditors. It was<br />

only at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the eighteenth century that this view of bankruptcy<br />

resolution came <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g, and was transformed from the earlier quasi<br />

crim<strong>in</strong>al proceed<strong>in</strong>g to a liquidat<strong>in</strong>g device.<br />

The present treatise gives a brief general <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>in</strong>to the question,<br />

repr<strong>in</strong>ts a couple of earlier bankruptcy regulations, and then concentrates<br />

on practical resolution of the liquidation. The ma<strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple is the equitable<br />

treatment of the creditors, but with a dist<strong>in</strong>ction between oYcial and<br />

private creditors. The treatise is clearly designed for oYcials who have to<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>ister debt resolution and bankruptcy proceed<strong>in</strong>gs. Numerous <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

cases are discussed, and model resolutions are provided. There<br />

are provisions for widows and children, who <strong>in</strong>advertently got <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> bankruptcy proceed<strong>in</strong>gs. The latter part of the work consists of tables,<br />

where payments depend<strong>in</strong>g on an agreed percentage of the orig<strong>in</strong>al debt<br />

can be checked.<br />

The treatise was clearly of use, as it was repr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1757.<br />

Not <strong>in</strong> Kress, Goldsmiths’ or Humpert; a number of copies listed <strong>in</strong> German libraries,<br />

no copies found <strong>in</strong> the US.<br />

First edition of Bonstetten’s best-known work, his much discussed anthropological<br />

study of the <strong>in</strong>Xuence of climate on human development. He<br />

assesses the impact of variations <strong>in</strong> climate on agriculture, political structure,<br />

religion, national character, education, and the economy. Despite his<br />

broad-brush assessments of the more rational northerners and impulsive<br />

southerners, his typology of national characters and psychology of the<br />

people rema<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

Bonstetten (1745–1832), a Swiss writer and government oYcial, was<br />

strongly <strong>in</strong>Xuenced by Rousseau and Bonnet. Due to his liberal ideas he<br />
