The Wrst two plates are particularly attractive, and show a male and female Wgure demonstrating the correct writing position and how to hold the hand. Further plates illustrate how to cut the quill, and how to execute the basic strokes in diVerent writing styles. Sample alphabets are given. This calligraphy and handwriting manual is taken from an Italian edition of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, originally published in Geneva by C. J. Panckoucke in 1783–90. The plates are copied from the French version, which in turn had been copied from those in the Wrst edition of Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, which makes Paillasson’s work the most widespread and popular of all writing-books. First edition of the Wrst practical treatise on the woodcut. It is famous for a series of Wve progressive plates showing the successive stages of printing a chiaroscuro woodcut. The Wrst volume of the treatise deals with the history of printing and illustration. Volume II deals with the methods of wood cutting in detail with clear illustrations of tools and procedures, it also includes information on design, perspective, and printing. Volume III, the supplement, is autobiographical and also contains various testimonials, table of contents and errata. Papillon (1698–1776), who came from a family of well-known wood engravers, was one of the best French designers and engravers of woodcuts for book work, employed by both French and Dutch publishers. The Traité can be seen as a showcase for his work with its 136 woodcut head and tail pieces and 257 other illustrations, large and small, incorporated in the text – only the portrait is by another hand. susanne schulz-falster rare books
