After studying law at Würzburg and Vienna, Banniza (1733–1800) became professor of law at the University of Innsbruck, and later rector of the university. First edition of Bartsch’s catalogue raisonné of the engraved work of the Baroque painter Guido Reni, together with that of his disciples Simon Cantarini, Jean-André and Elisabeth Strani and Laurent Loli. Bartsch warns that there are striking similarities between the works of the master and his disciples and therefore close scrutiny is important. He describes individual works in great detail, giving measurements and signatures where applicable. He gives detailed information on how to distinguish diVerent stages, proofs and counterproofs, and also copies. Some distinguishing marks are found on the engraved plate. The Austrian engraver, etcher and writer Johann Adam Bernhard von Bartsch (1757–1821) is best known for his pioneering catalogue of old master prints by Dutch, Flemish, German, and Italian painter-engravers from the 15th to the 17th century, published in twenty-one volumes under the title Le Peintre Graveur (21 vol., 1803–21), the foundation work of the Art History of printmaking and still cited today. First and only edition of an innovative attempt at presenting the history and progress of German literature – in the form of synoptic tables, inXuenced by Bacon’s classiWcation of knowledge. Bastia begins with a brief overview of German literature with its antecedents in classical writing, and inXuenced by other European literature, before condensing it all into thirty-two tables. In these tables he lists important works under the headings German language, grammar, dictionaries, moral philosophy, economics, law, education, Wne art, aesthetics, poetry, Wction, drama, periodicals etc. Each of the individual tables lists up to 20 authors and their works. A Wnal index gives the names of authors, with reference to the categories they are mentioned in. Bastia is not overly strict in what he deWnes as German literature and includes classics as well, but it is an interesting insight into the perception of German literature from abroad.
