First edition of this practical treatise on the construction, planting and maintenance of fences, hedges and other forms of enclosures. In the eighteenth century livestock was grazed on common land, and cultivated Welds were surrounded by hedges or fences to protect them. Oest suggests the practice common in Northern Germany of planting live hedges, so called Wallhecken, which were regularly cut down so that so that they formed an impenetrable border between the common land, where cattle grazed, and cultivated Welds. Another form he describes in detail is a low Xat earth wall, planted with hawthorn and similar bushes. He stresses the importance of leaving public access when constructing enclosures, and not infringing on neighbours’ rights. He gives extensive practical detail on the construction and location of the various forms of enclosure. On the fold-out engraved plates various forms of hedge and border construction are illustrated, together with one plate showing the tools used for its construction. Uncommon, no copy in OCLC. Second edition, Wrst published in folio the same year, of this rare work on the Greek and Roman standards of measurement (dry as well as liquid), relevant to ancient mathematics, economy and trade, as well as architecture and numismatics. The work’s purpose is to clarify the technically confusing systems of measurement appellation, and, as often with such antiquarian endeavours, to reform contemporary practice after the ancient model. handsome woodcuts include amphora of diVerent sizes, measuring rulers and standard weights. ‘Although not an arithmetic, this work is a scholarly and interesting contribution to the history of weights and measures of Greece and Rome, and the symbols inherited by the Middle Ages’ (Smith, Rara Arithmetica, p. 346). The pages (89–96) signed G and H contain the plates: G is a large double page with illustrations on recto and verso, H has two leaves with plates recto and verso; the four unnumbered leaves at the end, containing the index (3 leaves) and the errata (the last leaf with text recto, verso blank), have been bound after the preliminaries and contents-leaf.
