This brief résumé, the only form in which La richesse territoriale de la
France was published until the 19th century, is exceedingly rare. It is necessary
to distinguish it from a facsimile reprint which was published around
1810, which was set up with the same title page, the same year of publication,
but can be distinguished by the diVerence in type (see Duveen &
Klickstein 264/6).
Bound with the pamphlet are two broadsides and one eight-page pamphlet
documenting the reports sent back to Lavoisier in response to his
questionnaire which had been prepared to gather the data for his study.

Two works; Folio, pp. 16; 14, [2] blank; both with papal arms to title
page; uncut and folded, as issued; wrap-around title a little spotted (no.
I) and stained (no. II), but generally very clean and crisp.
First edition, very rare, of these two highly important documents, which
constitute the Wrst attempt to regulate the exportation of works of art and
to protect national heritage.
In 1802 Pope Pius VII enacted new regulations for the Vatican in order
to protect the heritage. He requested that an art registry of all kinds of immovable
and movable pieces of art, belonging either to the church or to
private citizens be listed, and their export prohibited. This formed the Wrst
step toward cultural heritage planning and was the beginning of a comprehensive
body of law preserving national heritage.
The Wrst comprehensive body of laws on this subject was the edict produced
by Cardinal Pacca and promulgated on 7th April 1820. It was intended
