In the second treatise he discusses issues concern<strong>in</strong>g the Law of the Sea,<br />

speciWcally the question who owns wrecks and whatever else washes up<br />

on the shore. He adheres to the doctr<strong>in</strong>e of the liberty of the seas, as pronounced<br />

by Grotius, Selden, and Bynkerhoek, but is particularly concerned<br />

with the question of property rights on chang<strong>in</strong>g shorel<strong>in</strong>es. When the<br />

water retreats, who owns the extra land, and similarly when the waters rise,<br />

will landowners be compensated?<br />

Dutch paper’ (Lew<strong>in</strong>e), occasional light brownig; contemporary full<br />

mottled calf, triple gilt Wllet to sides, Xat sp<strong>in</strong>e gilt, with gilt-lettered<br />

sp<strong>in</strong>e label, a.e.g.; an attractive copy.<br />

First edition of this erotic poem illustrated with charm<strong>in</strong>g vignettes and<br />

engrav<strong>in</strong>gs after LeClerc, executed by Arrivet, Halbou, Legrand, Leroy and<br />

Patas. The work is dedicated to the pr<strong>in</strong>cess de Lamballe with her arms<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the Wrst vignette, and her portrait on the engraved frontispiece<br />

and the last vignette. The pr<strong>in</strong>cesse de Lamballe (1749–1792) was Marie<br />

Anto<strong>in</strong>ette’s conWdante and was guillot<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 1792.<br />

‘The plates, though Wne, are lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> grace; on the other hand the tailpieces<br />

are superb, particularly the one said to represent the head dressed<br />

with plumes of the ill-fated pr<strong>in</strong>cess de Lamballe. The orig<strong>in</strong>al draw<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />
