The Ideal Farming Village 34 EICKEMEYER, Rudolf. Uiber die Erbauung der Dörfer. Frankfurt, Varrentrapp snd Wenner, 1787. £480 4to, pp. iv, 36, with 8 engraved mostly folding plates; title vignette and woodcut head- and tail-pieces; uncut in the original blue wrappers, spine reinforced; title page a little browned, else Wne. First edition of the winning contribution to the prize question of the Göttingen Academy of 1786. Following a number of village Wres, the Academy requested contributions on the question of how best to plan and design a village, both for rebuilding the ones damaged by Wre and in general for planning new villages. Eickemeyer proposes a village based on a grid system, with mixed-sized farms, a centrally located church, school and court house, and easy access to roads. The outline is illustrated on the engraved plates. He also makes some general observations on the ideal location of such a village, close to a river, at suYcient distance to avoid Xooding, in the shadow of some hills or mountains, protected from Werce winds, but not in an area with stagnant waters and its inherent dangers. Eickemeyer (1753–1825) studied mathematics at Göttingen and later became a well-known army engineer, and military Wgure. ADB V, pp. 743–746; uncommon, OCLC lists copies at Munich and Frankfurt. First edition, uncommon, of two Wnely produced legal essays, fulsomely presented to Cardinal Orsini. The Wrst one deals with the importance of the law in civic life. Erioni maintains that the juridical faculty is of utmost importance in the university, as here future public administrators are being trained and educated. Even though science and industry will produce wealth for the state, lawyers are necessary to guarantee a smooth running of the system, provide the framework of their operation and settle disputes. The legal profession is also instrumental in maintaining civic order, and necessary for the settlement of international disputes through negotiation rather than with the help of weaponry. In the second treatise he discusses issues concerning the Law of the Sea, speciWcally the question who owns wrecks and whatever else washes up on the shore. He adheres to the doctrine of the liberty of the seas, as pronounced by Grotius, Selden, and Bynkerhoek, but is particularly concerned with the question of property rights on changing shorelines. When the water retreats, who owns the extra land, and similarly when the waters rise, will landowners be compensated? First edition of this erotic poem illustrated with charming vignettes and engravings after LeClerc, executed by Arrivet, Halbou, Legrand, Leroy and Patas. The work is dedicated to the princess de Lamballe with her arms included in the Wrst vignette, and her portrait on the engraved frontispiece and the last vignette. The princesse de Lamballe (1749–1792) was Marie Antoinette’s conWdante and was guillotined in 1792. ‘The plates, though Wne, are lacking in grace; on the other hand the tailpieces are superb, particularly the one said to represent the head dressed with plumes of the ill-fated princess de Lamballe.
