A collection of three rare seventeenth century bookseller catalogues, which, like the bulk of Paris bookseller catalogues of the time, were made up of second-hand books, and clearly meant for the retail. They give a fascinating insight into European book distribution. I. The catalogue was prepared by the widow of Edmond II Martin (162?–171?), who was working together with her son-in-law Jean I Boudot (1651–1706) since 1682. It is a comprehensive stock catalogue of approximately seven thousand titles, with selected imports from diVerent cities in Europe. Included are Latin texts, books on theology, law, medicine, literature, history of science, with books in French, Spanish, Italian and English within the diVerent categories. Within the science and medicine section numerous works by Aldrovandi are oVered, together with new publications by Boyle (Historiam naturalem sanguinis, 1684), Hilden, Hippocratis, Harvey, Kircher etc. There was clearly a good connection with Spanish dealers or publishers, as the Spanish section is particularly substantial and well organised. Within the diVerent categories, the books are listed more or less in alphabetical order by author, giving title, size, number of volumes and year, but no price – a system, which applies to the other catalogues as well. Predominantly seventeenth century books are being oVered. II. The supplement is prepared by the same Wrm as above, now working together with Edmond Martin’s son Etienne Martin (16??–1706). A further two thousand eight hundred titles are oVered, arranged in similar categories as before. Amongst the Latin and French books, there is a mix susanne schulz-falster rare books
of older books and recent publications, amongst the books from England, Holland and Germany they are almost exclusively recent publications. This volume has more extensive manuscript annotations at the end, commenting on Spinoza’s Clef de Sanctuaire, the bogus French title under which his Tractatus theologico-politicus circulated in France since 1678 (see Israel, Radical Enlightenment, pp. 302–304). III. This catalogue was prepared by the Wrm of Daniel Horthemels (16??–1691), and oVers some four thousand Wve hundred titles, published in diVerent cities of Europe between 1529 and 1688. Individual sections are entitled theology, miscellaneous, medicine and law, followed by French, Spanish and Italian books. Newton’s Principia is included, as are other important texts. The French books are predominantly published in Paris, but also some from Lyon and the Netherlands, and are mostly recent publications in the Weld, especially in the theology section (mostly of Jansenist tendency). The catalogue concludes with a section of editions of the classics. Throughout books are marked in a contemporary hand, and a few extra titles are entered.
