and right-hand-man, Willliam Hammack (whom Night<strong>in</strong>gale <strong>in</strong>variably<br />

called Hammick), to whom this present volume is dedicated. Hammick<br />

was amongst those <strong>in</strong>vited to use Night<strong>in</strong>gale’s rooms <strong>in</strong> Old Burl<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

Street and to attend breakfast parties there dur<strong>in</strong>g the Congress. Several<br />

of Nightigale’s letters to William Farr conta<strong>in</strong> references, or ‘messages’ to<br />

Hammick, usually thank<strong>in</strong>g him for his assistance with her work.<br />

[Provenance:] This copy if <strong>in</strong>scribed <strong>in</strong> Night<strong>in</strong>gale’s hand at the head<br />

of the title to ‘Mr. Hammick <strong>in</strong> remembrance of much k<strong>in</strong>d & eYcient assistance<br />

rendered. Florence Night<strong>in</strong>gale London K<strong>in</strong>an/63.’ Twenty years<br />

later the book was presented ‘To Dr. William Hammond of Nuneaton <strong>in</strong><br />

remembrance of his k<strong>in</strong>d attention to James T. Hammick Summer-hill<br />

House 18 Dec. 1883’ and <strong>in</strong> 1916 Hammond presented the book to the<br />

Library of the British Medical Association (<strong>in</strong>scription at foot of front free<br />

end-paper signed and dated September 21st). Tipped on to the <strong>in</strong>ner marg<strong>in</strong><br />

of the Preface is an accompany<strong>in</strong>g presentation letter from Hammond<br />

to the librarian and the volume bears the stamp of the BMA on the titlepage,<br />

preface, <strong>in</strong>dex, foot of p. 155 and verso of plan II.<br />

James T. Hammick (Hammack until 1831) was Wrst elected a Fellow<br />

of the Society of Statisticians <strong>in</strong> 1846. He served on the Society’s Council<br />

from 1861 before becom<strong>in</strong>g the Treasurer <strong>in</strong> 1868 and he held that post<br />

until 1874 when he resigned due to ill-health.<br />

First edition of this collection of ‘anthropological’ observations by the physician<br />

and scientist Nudow (1752–1810). He dismisses traditional travel<br />

books and presents <strong>in</strong>stead his own observations on human characteristics,<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g human foibles, motivation, and psychology. The potpourri of<br />

brief journalistic essays covers human embarrassments, social encounters,<br />

but also suicide, murder etc.<br />

Nudow later published a comprehensive study of the phenomenon of<br />

human sleep.<br />
