The anonymous author Wrst traces the history of the alphabet and writing, before concentrating on practical information on the preparation and sharpening of pens and the preparation of ink, both coloured and gold or silver. All manner of ingredients go into the preparation of the coloured inks, and for every colour a number of diVerent recipes are given, with information of their origin. Special chapters deal with the preparation of the writing surface, be it paper, vellum or metal. The second half deals with ciphers, cryptography, and the use of a variety of secret or esoteric writing systems, including Trithemius’ cryptographic system. Communication systems which do not involve the written word are also described, such as messages conveyed with the help of bells, coughs etc. A whole chapter is devoted to memory games and puzzles of all kinds, including number games, anagrams, and mnemonics. Numbers take up the Wnal sections, with an explanation of diVerent regional numbering systems, information on arithmetic, and a perpetual calendar. First and only edition, rare, of this study of the origins of the Hebrew language. Zendrini begins his study with Vico’s observation of the importance of language as a cultural testimony of history. He ascertains the ancient origin of Hebrew and the language of scripture, but maintains that it shared its origin with ancient Egyptian roots. He supports his thesis with extensive citations from classical historians, Kircher and others. The cleric Angelo Zendrini (1763–1849), came from one of the oldest Venetian families. He taught mathematics at the Atheneum in Padova, and published mostly historical works. OCLC lists one copy at Chicago, KVK adds two more in Berlin and Rostock.
